At first I assumed it was just one of the occasional things that slip past the gmail spam filters, but it doesn't look like the usual '8uy V14g4rA' or 'Dear sir, you are not being knowings me, but...' spams. Anyone have any ideas about what's up (and no, I didn't send anything to [email protected])?

I get those occasionally - I assume they are probing - a fair few people will reply denying sending the mail and that way they have a verified live email account to sell to spammers. :evil:

Don't worry. I only know it because I was bored one night and read up on it at wikipedia:

...Leetspeak often represents an intermediate stage in a user's use of the Internet. First there is the "newbie" stage, where the user is ignorant about the customs and language of the Internet. Next there is the Leet stage, where the user has obtained enough information to "speak leet" to prove their superiority over "newbies" or to simply shorten typing time. Grammar (especially capitals etc) is often ignored in this stage. Many Internet users of high-school age are in the stage. The third and final stage is a more mature stage, where most words are spelt in full and grammar is used correctly. Most major websites are hosted by people in this stage—highly Internet savvy people who only use leet ironically. For example, Halo Bungie.org (http://halo.bungie.org) and Penny Arcade (http://www.penny-arcade.com)....

Since you don't have one, maybe you can just find out where they live and use your shoe instead! :lol:

If their steel tipped...

BTW, I was confused about the "leet". Come to think of it, I still am. Isn't that mainly a hacker thing?

It started out that way, apparently as a means to circumvent filters on forums that were targetting conversations about hacking (since the people hosting the forums didn't want any visits from people in suits and dark glasses), but soon became a status symbol, as more experienced hackers were able to use and understand increasingly obsfucated leet, for example, someone might start out with simple things like:

"wH4+'S j00R nAME" for "what is your name" (wikipedia),

then move onto more complicated things that only experienced leet speakers would be able to read:

"/\/\?|<£'§ 1££+ §|<?11§ þ|/\||\| _|??" for "Mike's leet skills own you" (wikipedia)

Now it's not used seriously anywhere except by really lame 12 year olds, has lost all it's status and is now used in a sarcastic or humerous manner, eg:

"L0l!!!11!eleventy-one1!1!11one1!!!exclamationmark!!11oneone!1" (excessively over-punctuated 'lol')
