"Longevity of belief is not a good reason for belief." Well said. HOWEVER, just because a widely held belief is long-lived doesn't make it untrue, either. This is the problem. You need to examine WHY something is widely held and why it has survived for a long time.

Hey, I wasn't the one who started with the longevity argument. I was just answering it.

And I agree, it doesn't make it untrue either, and yes, you have to ask why, because longevity on its own is proof of nothing.

For 90% of written history, and then oral history going back before that, people believed in the Ptolemaic system. Common sense let them down on that one.. big time.

With the aid of quantum physics, there is no need for a first cause. But I won't explain it because, it will just sound like fancy technology. Quantum physics is today what the microscope was to scientists in the 18th century, and just as well received by skeptics.

Do you know what nothing is ?

Nothing is exactly that, it is nothing, it is zero, you can't even imagine it because it has no image. You can't even trap "nothing" into a bottle, it is impossible because nothing is nothing, it does not exist.

Scientists have observed particles popping in and out of existence inside a vacuum, but a vacuum is not empty, they have tried very hard to produce a vacuum that contains absolute nothing but they haven't been able to.

Come back to me when you have observed particles popping out of nothing.

Sadly enough, there is often a shortage of COMMON SENSE among scientists, science, and the systemizing mind, in general.

Thank GOD I am born with HUMAN common sense, and escape the SYSTEMIZATION OF THE HUMAN BRAIN that abstract language, collective standard I.Q. type intelligence, and complex culture can make into a reality of human being, TO once again REGAIN HUMAN COMMON SENSE.

And when I say common sense, I am talking to the innate instinctual and intuitive prowess of human being.

There ARE A LOT OF DUH NOWS in science.

I think that Stephen Hawking more than evidences that alone.

Problem is he is viewing life from a rather LIMITED VIEW, LITERALLY and metaphorically SPEAKING AND PERCEIVING THE WORLD AROUND him.

And that is the nature of Autism, overall, here, whether 'we' want to speak to the 800LB Gorilla in the room or not.

Also, as trivia fact, I sound just like a Gorilla when I work out per observance of the gym attendant that works there. She also says I sound a little like an elephant too.

But it's JUST another human power, to power greater physical strength, snuffed out by culture.

MAKING THIS WILD ANIMAL SOUND, naturally increases dopamine and thereby increases physical strength but most people just call it SAVAGE, instead of frigging COMMON SENSE.

People with Tourette's syndrome often make grunting sounds to do the same, involuntarily, to balance the dopamine imbalance in their brain, UNWITTINGLY SO.

AND according to the gym attendant, I AM THE ONLY ONE 'smart' enough to do it.

I know things PER HUMAN COMMON SENSE cause I SEEK IT, FIND IT, PRACTICE IT, AND AND IT WORKS.

And YES, THE EMPIRICAL evidence of me leg pressing 900LBS, 15 reps, after being a shut-in, not even being able to walk from the car to Whataburger, AND stay 15 minutes, just a year and a half ago, SHOWS THE TRUE FLESH AND BLOOD HITS THE ROAD PROWESS OF Human Common Sense, sought and found, at age 54.

Human beings, overall, are not nearly as SMART, OVERALL, AS THEY COULD BE, if they simply look within, THROUGH TRUE POTENTIAL MUCH FULLER HUMAN INTELLIGENCE(S) PROWESS WAYS, instead of the spoon fed way of life that culture brings.

God is everywhere in Nature, AS NATURE, AS IS.

Using GOD to one's advantage, as a higher power MORE than what culture provides alone, is sometimes the job of JOB.

And sometimes, as in the case of me, the metaphorical experience of JOB, in physical chronic FIVE-year-long life threatening illness, IS what it takes to escape the illusions of spoon fed culture that CAN AND DO restrict human potential FULLER INTELLIGENCE(S) to the state of SLUG, in metaphor.

Who told you ?

Verbal language is NOT necessary.

MOTHER NATURE TRUE IS GOD.

IT IS JUST HUMAN common SENSE(S) perceiving

IT at age 3, before I can speak, at age 4.

I guess it is just another

Autistic Superpower.

Perhaps that is metaphor.

Perhaps that is not.

WHO KNOWS..;)

IT IS ENOUGH TO KNOW FOR ME. :)

EVERY NOW OF NOW.. PERIOD. :)

Okay but what makes you think God is inside everything ?

I do not think GOD, I work with GOD as IS, AND SENSE GOD AS IS, WITHIN, OUTSIDE, ABOVE AND SO BELOW.

A common fallacy is that words are reality.

Words are only tools that scribe reality.

Words are only abstract constructs that NEVER EVER FULLY MEASURE REALITY.

MINDFUL AWARENESS WITHOUT WORDS

CAN BE TO TRULY 'know' GOD

IN A SENSORY AND EMOTING WAY.

God is not somewhere else, GOD lives in us and everywhere else.

And that's just common sense for those in the TRUE KNOW OF COMMON SENSE,

REPEATED through historical philosophies and religions through myths PER IDEAS that truly comprise all
words as metaphors for reality, as is, Mother Nature TRUE aka GOD.

SO in other words, relatively speaking, ALL HUMAN WORDS ARE MYTH.

Myths/metaphors attempt to house THE essence of GOD THAT IS Mother Nature TRUE through VEHICLES AND VESSELS OF words THAT
ARE METAPHORS AS words ALIKE.

But the GOD of Nature has a language that is never ever abstracts constructs of human words, alone.

AS additional METAPHOR, My cat knows GOD better than '99%' of folks attending church today, as my cat has the fortune
of not FALLING to abstract concepts of language, collective intelligence supported by that language, and complex culture supported by language and collective intelligence, recorded as such.

Additionally, My cat has the fortune of NOT having an evolved, so-called, advanced neocortical function of brain that makes the illusion of past and present seem real.

In true effect, perhaps that is a virus in effect and AFFECT OF WHAT humans do; YES, Neocortical FUNCTION HUMAN STYLE.

For all practical intents and purposes, which my cat has NONE,

My CAT IS GOD and integral part of GOD that knows NO Separation FROM GOD.

AND WHAT A WONDERFUL LIFE HE LIVES, GIVEN SUBSISTENCE, IN WHAT CAN BE, A GIFT OF CULTURE.

SO YEAH, he KNows GOD WELL, AS IS, always NOW and getting fed for free, is just ICING ON THE CAKE THAT IS GOD.

And this my friend, IS COMMON SENSE. :)

It's not common sense, it is anthropomorphism.

We know God exists through common sense but cannot know his exact nature using common sense, we cannot know his whereabouts using common sense, these are things that he must communicate to us himself.

IT IS NOT common sense, for those who never seek, and find ways to communicate with GOD.

And that my friend is relegated to the awakened and enlightened among humankind who do find a way to connect to GOD like this.

And YES, common sense for those individuals outside of Plato's metaphorical cave.

I cannot show that to you, alone; only you can find IT for your self.

My FAITH in GOD IS COMPLETE, 100%, AND I DO REAL LIFE MIRACLES with higher powerS of GOD in communicating with GOD AND WORKING WITH GOD like this, NON-VERBALLY, almost every now of now, as my simple existence does prove now and now again, FOR ME, WITH NEVER EVER A TRUE NEED TO PROVE IT TO ANYONE ELSE.

That part IN attempting to Help others find IT, is HUMAN empathy, another potential human 'higher power' that all folks do not share equally, as is. :)

QM is well on its way. But you already know what I'm going to say: The lack of necessity for asserting a First Cause doesn't mean there wasn't one.

I find QM fascinating. The only problem I can see with QM in this discussion is that QM concentrates on the very small. It's not like sitting down on my couch and wondering if my couch is there, not there, or simultaneously both AND neither there and/or not there at the same time.

But there is the issue of my socks. I used to obsess over matching my socks when I put them in the wash. I could completely empty out the washer, transfer to the dryer and NOT drop anything…and when they come out of the dryer, I'm always short one sock. I can't seem to verify which, but I suspect the dryer. I have a strong suspicion that laundry dryers are quantum portals on a macro level that open up to some form of hammerspace. And as interesting as that might be for some folks, I'd like my socks back, please. There's probably another me in a parallel universe wondering where the heck all these socks are coming from.

I agree. Which is why I struggle with the word atheist. When called to qualify, I call myself functionally atheist, because while there may be a deity/first cause/FSM or whatever, I don't believe humans have the wherewithall to comprehend such a being and have anthropomorphized one with all attempts.

QM also explains universe sized questions, in the same way that atoms are very small, but they help us to explain planets and galaxies. Check out the video I posted.

Ordinary logic demands an uncaused First Cause.

Quantum Mechanics is only a possible explanation as to why electrons etc. do not behave according to Newtonian macro-physics. QM is not the "magic bullet" that justifies all narcissism.

Ordinary logic is toxic to ordinary narcissists.

That's just one small chapter of the QM book. Sounds like you need to go back to school, David.

I love the image of errant socks popping up elsewhere as a portal opens. 8)

But in all seriousness, try running your hand along the top of the dryer drum, the part that isn't visible when you look in the dryer. Static electricity often sticks the socks firmly to the drum and they have to be manually peeled off. After learnng this I have now made it a habit to always run my hand along the dryer drum.

I also discovered that the socks can be peeled loose and reapplied to bedsheets. I once made my bed with freshly laundered sheets and it wasn't until I removed the sheets again for another wash that I saw a sock on the mattress. :?

That's my position exactly. 8)

My transition to functional atheism (love the term) was shorter than yours possibly because I was raised Jewish. For some cultural reason I can't quite put my finger on (maybe because it's also a cultural identity?????) it seems easier for Jewish people to arrive at atheism or agnosticism. In my personal experience (people I've talked to over the years) it seems like Christian and Muslim people who pull away from their birth religion are more likely to do so because they disagree with the structure and leadership of the religion and they become Deists or switch religions (Unitarian Universalist being a big one to go to). This is from my experience of various social circles over my life and can't be generalized globally. It might just be the people I gravitate to.

When I try to explain my position, as you have done, they say "so you're Agnostic?". But that isn't quite it either. It isn't that I am undecided or think it's impossible to know if there is a God. It's that I think the terms "God" and even "Creator" or "Prime Mover" are so necessarily anthropomorphized as to be wrong. We have a human frame of reference and can't help but apply human concepts such as "intelligent", "conscious", "being". Whatever is out there is so outside our frame of reference that anthropomorphizing is inevitable unless we stick to what we can discover through naturalistic means. Even saying something like "God is life" or "God is inside us" is still anthropomorphizing.

Functional atheism is an attempt to get away from the mental trap of anthropomorphizing. It is unlikely that the total truth of "out there" can even fit inside our brains. When we say "God" or "Prime Mover" we have chopped whatever it is down to a size that fits inside our brains and I refuse to do that.

I agree, and perhaps it's as you say, re cultural identity. And yes, a few Christians I've known have gone to some other religion, or mysticism.

Agnostic to me is passive, inert, undecided. Something like that. I can't quite pin it down, but agnostic doesn't work for me either.
