You're very welcome.

I can really whittle away the hours with the encyclopedia galactica articles there, though I've exhausted their supply of short stories. My absolute favorite concept is that of toposophic levels and archialects: http://www.orionsarm.com/sophontology/singularities.html. It's a concept I first came across in 'Fire in the Deep' by Verner Vinge, and OA really does and excellent job of expanding on the subject.

Oh well. The way stem cell research and neural interface technologies are coming along, I might live to do just that.

Today I was feeling very crappy, in an anxious, angry PTSD way, since I'd been reading some things that brought up bad memories. I drew this to express how I felt:

It's an A3 drawing, and my scanner only takes A4, so I took two scans to show some of the clipped details.

I like the last two, although they distribued me. I think the technique was better than what I saw in some of the other ones you posted. does mood affect your technique?

A lot of the ones I've posted were early learning attempts, so they're a bit crappy. Later attempts tend to be more refined, but it also depends on how much effort I want to put in to it. The moonscape was a recent effort, but it was my first drawing in over a year and I only felt like something quick and easy. If I'd been prepared to put more effort into it, I could have done a lot better. With this last one, I was somewhat more motivated and had gotten a bit of practice to brush up on my skills.

Also, the moonscape was a bit experimental, since I wanted to see how it would work out with very soft pencils (B7 and B9). The latest one is done in 5H, which is far harder and easier to do fine work with.

did you have problems making circles or using shading to create a sense of volume? My art teacher is always nagging me on those two things. I can do perspective drawings better than almost everyone in the class, but my faces look like sh*t.

Did you use models or draw from memory for the people?

if you did any models, was it akward?

No models. All the stuff is taken from pictures, usually displayed on my monitor while I draw. Some minor details are made up from scratch (the warehouse thingy that makes up the background of the last pic), but I'm really not that good at doing things from imagination. Getting a model would be very interesting, but I doubt I'd have the nerve or money.

Circles and shading have always been difficult for me; when I was taking art at school I lagged behind a lot of the other people, but with practice I've developed more of a feel for it and established techniques that work for me. I'm not sure how good my perspective is, since I've rarely made much use of it; probably because I was never taught it in school.

This is the kind of stuff I dream about doing every day.

*sighs dreamily*

All I need to do now is find a class that teaches rhino. Or some other high-end software that is better than the cr*ppile known as AutoCAD.

Neat ship. I like the 'open to space' look. No fiddling around with biological life-support systems.

<Wonders why we're the only people on the thread, bar one>

Aren't there any other creative types here?

Well, I know SamariTB does some drawing but it is clear he hasen't found this thread yet.

I am quite sure we are not alone in the artistic universe. . . .I want to believe.

Hi guys, consider yourselves found :D

And I had thought I was the only 3D modeler/texture person around.

A couple stills from my most recent project. I'm more of an organic modeler than mechanical.

Starting on the textures... the bump map still needs some work though.

Nice. Er... creepy with the eye-holes though. Are you making it for something particular, or as a stand-alone project? What made you go for a 'normal' looking person, rather than the 'perfect' sort that most models seem to be?

Oh, the eyes will come later. Right now I'm just working on the body geometry. It's for my demo reel - kind of a rebellion against the perfect-3D-babe phenomenon you see all over sites like CGTalk.com . The goal is to create a warrior woman character as if for a computer game, but make her look like she's actually spent half her life hacking monsters apart. If I have time, I'll add armor and a sword. The final goal is to render some turnarounds or flybys for my demo reel.
