I told my current girlfriend that I've got AS the day we decided to move from the realm of friendship into relationship. She's quite understanding, and she does respect me for who I am.

well, u befriend that person first. tell em wen ur friends. then move in. tell all ur friends though, or ur lover will think its just for sympathy.
