I've read articles that have stated that there may be a link between early childhood seizures and autism spectrum disorders. I had a seizure when I was three years old as the result of an allergic reaction to penicillin. I sometimes wonder if that has anything to do with the other problems I've had throughout my life. I know I was always very shy & withdrawn, even before the seizure, according to my mother, but I wonder if the seizure could have altered my brain chemistry to such an extent that it caused me to have a lot of other problems throughout my life. I wonder if the seizure took what was naturally a very shy, quiet, withdrawn child, & possibly put my brain into a more severe state, possibly causing an autism spectrum disorder. Or if I was just born already on the autism spectrum & the seizure had nothing to do with anything in my later life.
Has anyone on this forum had any experiences with seizures during childhood, specifically early childhood, & do you believe there is a link between seizures & autism spectrum disorders? I'd just like to hear any thoughts that anyone may have on the subject.
Thanks
