The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross

I've watched most of the series twice, in various intervals since the beginning of the month. I basically have a huge man crush on Henry Louis Gates. He has a great way of relating history and modern events, and I stand in awe of his intellect and delivery.

I last night laying in bed watch part of The Simpsons episode "Helter Shelter" from season 14. Didn't finsh because I had to go to bed.

I guess making the best pretzels out of a bad batch doesn't count for all that much. Fair, I suppose, but I still wanted Kimberley to win, and her picnic pie looked the tastiest to me, but I'm in a meaty mood lately.

The last couple of episodes a recent series of British Baking, for those who don't know

Africa's Great Civilizations

I had to skip out on the second half of episode 1, due to recent overexposure to religion. I expect it was as insightful as the first half. Basically, we overemphasized the Greeks and Romans in my education, and largely overlooked their predecessors in Africa. The second half covered the pervasive religions which have emerged from Africa, and I just didn't want to watch the wars which established them as state religions.

Tonight, I watched episode 2, and the second half thoroughly examined the slave trade. The first half laid out the complex trade and diplomatic relations with Europe that led to the unprecedented export of millions of people to the Western Hemisphere. Gates didn't pull any punches, either, showing no more sympathy or condemnation for either the African or European slave traders. It's a beautiful documentary film on a very difficult subject. Hard to watch, but worth it.
