I like Death Cab for Cutie, The Killers, The Arcade Fire, Passion Pit, Karen O and the Kids, Asobe Seksu, and some others. :)

Anyone else?

Cool.

My favorite indie groups are The Caesars, Apollo Ghosts

The Caesars are really cool if you check out their catalog, and not just listen to "Jerk it Out" the only song they are known for.

I liked indie back in the 90s, when it was short for "independent" music. That was when "alternative" was no longer an alternative because it had gone mainstream. then major labels started putting out "indie" music in the 'aughts, and it was no longer indie.

I liked: Slint, Tortoise, Polvo, Shellac, Trans Am, Rex, Rodan, Rachael's, F&*^, Bedhead, Low, Stereolab, Le Tigre, first 2 Rapture ablums, Magnetic Fields, Animal Collective, Les Savy Fav, The Makeup, Firewater, Royal Trux, Low, The Sea and Cake, Flaming Lips (in the early 90s), Beat Happening, Sebadoh, Fugazi, Jawbox, Beauty Pill, Galaxy 500, Luna, Menomena, Need New body, Blonde Redhead, Guided By Voices, Mogwai, Sonic youth, 3ra1n1ac, Boradcast, Do Make Say Think, morphine, Built to Spill, Cap'n'Jazz, Cibo Matto, Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, PJ Harvey, Wedding Present, Xiu Xiu, Yo La Tengo,.

Those were the bands that I liked enough to go see their live shows (saw those bands 1-7 times each). Played some shows with some of them. I didn't include any of my friends' local bands in that list if they weren't nationally known touring bands. Also didn't include any screamo or the new psychadelic stuff, both of which styles were usually put out by indie labels, but had a distinct scene style.

I suppose that you mean the genre.
the word "indie" simply means without being signed to a major label.
I name thousand of punk bands on indie labels but I will only name bands that fit into
the indie genre.

Some of my favorite indie bands are or were.
Bright eyes
Modest Mouse
Beirut
calexico
cold war kids
The Decemberists
Elliot smith
Fan farlo
The National
Iron and wine
Neutral milk hotel
Okkervil river
The tallest man on earth

One group I just recently started listening to is Florence + The Machine. It usually doesn't matter too much to me whether a music group has a big-name label or not, or how a musician is categorized, as long as I enjoy the sound. In particular, certain singers' voices (like Florence Welch's) can be absolutely enthralling to me, and right now I can't stop playing "The Drumming Song" over and over.

The parish festival (yes, that's the band name)
Flaming lips- more well known but good
DeVotchKa- French but great
Grandaddy- because why, that's why.

That's it for now, I'm not quite that indie I don't think

I thought DeVotchKa was from Denver. You're talking about the group that makes rompy gypsy-sounding indie-rock music right?

Yeasayer is another group I like that's sort of similar to DeVotchKa. They've gotten kind of popular and have a new album now. I think their 2007 album "All Hour Cymbals" album is more interesting than the new stuff though.

I like MM only since Johnny Marr joined. :P Actually, I still don't like them.

There's only one type of 'indie' - British indie music. The commercial, NME kind.

If you mean indie as in no or self label, then Karlahan, Urizen, Pryapisme, Duct Tape Mustache and Dirty Granny Tales.

I like some of it, not sure what exactly makes music indie though.......I know originally it just meant indepedently released music, but I imagine when one says indie most people aren't thinking idependently released metal from bands like Fintroll who have no label.

People tend to think it's about bands only 5 people have heard of, it's always been about attitude and having cool hair in my perspective. Again, because I believe that the British press uses the word indie to describe the wave which Britpop had risen from, and their descendents.

House of Wolves
Kattoo
Mount Kimbie
The Bees (These guys are excellent!

I like Stellastarr* too. And someone I trust on these matters told me Beat Happening are good, but I can't remember what they sound like.

My favourites off the top of my head are the Arcade Fire and Metric (Emily Haines and the Soft Skeletons are also up there). For the lesser-known groups, I'd say Enon, the Album Leaf, Iron and Wine, The Dears and the Stars.
