i had a picture taken of me, and i almost cropped it because i was embarrassed by how my hands looked.
Image

but to be fair.... i actually hold my hands in weird positions so the picture is accurate. i like them to be flexed tightly in some way, otherwise i don't feel "right".

do you hold your hands in strange positions? is this an aspie or autie thing?

I do find myself doing strange things with my arms and hands at times, especially when stressed or trying to get comfortable. I often find myself resting one arm on top of my head while sitting or reclining. As for my hands, I will stretch out all five fingers on both hands while they are at my side when I am stressed out. I do find myself doing other odd things at times, like wrist flapping when I am thinking and sometimes when I am talking. It may be normal body language, stress related or some sort of autistic trait, I am really not certain at this time.

(I am not certain of my diagnosis, however, so take what I say with a grain of salt.)

Unless I monitor where my hands are and make a conscious effort to position them normally, I usually end up holding my hands up in front of my waist with the wrists limp and the fingers in a stiff clawed position. It gets even weirder when I'm running because then I end up holding them right up in front of me like I'm a t-rex.

One other thing I just thought of that I do is that I use my feet as a second pair of hands. It's part of the reason I like wearing flip flops so much. When I wear them, my toes are readily accessible for picking up things and bringing them to my hands. This is especially useful when working under a car and a tool is just out of reach.

I can't say I do that very often, Hyper... but my wife does it a lot - and she's NT. Hope that helps. :)

I just don´t know what to do with my arms and hands when talking to people :? Often I will cross my arms, but when reading pop-psycology books (or womens magazines) it is said that this means that the person is angry or making a distanced impression! Not true at all, I just do not now what else to do. I am trying to think about it when in public, but there are so many other things to think about as well.

At some point, some years ago (but before I found out about the aspie thing) I had noticed how people touch other people during a conversation. Just a light touch on the arm etc. I tried it out for a year or two but newer seemed to get the hang of it. I must do something wrong or do it out of sync, because I find that people just look at me as if I am a bit off. Now I have dropped the idea altogether, I will never figure out when it is appropriate to touch other people.

Haven´t really thought about it before, but I did as a child. I remember that my reaction to stumbling (I often did) was to cross my fingers tight and hold my arms into my body. I distinctly remember to notice this myself and thinking that it was a silly reaction when falling. I decided not to do it anymore and try to do something more rationel (is this normal behaviour in 4-5 year old kids??).

I do not remember if I did it in other situations, probably did. I seem to have picked up some of the behaviour clues fairly early in life (like not talking to yourself in public, not mumbling and laughing when reading a book etc.)

Thanks for bringing it up, I am still investigating my new life :D

When I brush my teeth, I hold my left arm/hand like a T-Rex haha. I had NO IDEA that I did this until my husband noticed and started teasing me. Now I'm trying to learn to put my hand on my hip or something..but I keep going back into dino-mode!

Yeah, I've seen pictures of myself where my hands are at strange angles and it makes me wonder if I walk around like that all the time. It looks like they are on backwards.

If I am not holding onto anythin my hands are tight by my side or I fold them or hold them infront of me. what is much weirder is that the face seems to have no expression and I just stare blankly. Anyhow most of my photos are weird.

I tend to flex my hands/arms in an odd manner and extend this to picking up objects in a likewise unusual manner. For me, it's to feel my muscles, tendons/ligaments and joints functioning. When holding my hands/arms "normally," I cross them (leading to false accusations that I'm somehow mad), put my hands in my pockets or keep them close to my torso.

Undxed.

If I'm not paying attention I have, what I and others affectionatly refer to as "T-rex arms". That is I hold them in a bent position at the emblow so the wrist is up near my chest or between my chest and waist and then limp at the wrist so the hand dangles. So, like a t-rex. If I am "Talking" with my hands they just move and waggle at the wrist. I've seen it on video, looks weird. I'm unaware when I'm doing it. SO I try to pay attention and with practice I've learned to hold and move my arms more like other people. But if I forget, I revert to t-rex arms until someone nudges me.

I usually close my hands in fist position without being aware of it. I have done so all my life. Especially if I do something with the other hand, the other as unused goes into this fist position automatically.

I also unconsciously keep my hands upright like this: W (imagine my head at the top of that middle triangle, arms are bending from elbow), which according to a some sort of a specialist is a sign of neurological problems (read autism). Now that I am made painfully aware of it being a clear sign of autism, that every expert can spot on immediately, I hate to find myself keeping my hands unconsciously in such a manner. But is keeping hands in that manner a problem? No. Does it have some horrible side effects? No. So keep your hands wherever, I’d say, and don’t problematize it too much. I have lived all my life keeping them in a “ret*d” way without knowing it, but so what... :)
