I'm new here, but I understand that a lot of aspies don't want to be "cured." I kind of do, though. If there were a cure for autism spectrum disorders, would you get the the cure? Why or why not, that is what I am asking. Sometimes I embrace being different, and sometimes I dread
it. Sometimes I feel that I am on top of the world, sometimes I feel disabled. It is about 50/50 for me.

I would not want to be "cured" per say but I would want a pill that helps me function when I am outside in the world. I love being who I am but there are some things I wish I were better at, and one of them is socializing.

That's what I've been thinking but forgot to post. Good idea for a compromise.

If there was a cure that would keep the good qualities of being AS and reduce or rid of the bad qualities (ie little or no social skills, can't read body language) I would go for it depending on what needs to be done. If the cure is something like brain surgery, I rather not be cured. It's too risky  not to mention expensive  . I have days when it feels like life as an AS person sucks and I rather get out of it.

I just thought I would let you know about a treatment that I have been told about by my Psychologist. It is a type of air pressure chamber that you go into several days a week for about an hour or so at a time. It is compleatly painless. I was told that this is a treatment that does well with young children and that it helps them overcome some of their aspie traits. However, I was also warned that as an adult the treatment is given under a more strict Dr. care as it is capable of bringing emotions such as empathy, and hurt, and many other emotions out in you. The problem being that for someone like me who has had little sympathy/ empathy etc my entire life, it can be a very difficult adjustment, and not always reversable. So the question would be are you someone who really wants to know how most people experience those emotions, would you be able to learn to accept them, or is it something that might be too high risk for you? I chose not to have the treatment for fear of not being able to cope with all of the new feelings and emotions that I have no experience dealing with. I looked at it like this. Children get to learn how to deal with emotions and feelings over many years, I felt that with this treatment, I may be flooded with them, and just not know how to cope with them. It is however something you can ask your doctor about, and see what their opinion on it would be, and see if it might be something that interests you.

I think a common misconception is that life will magically be perfect if we just got rid of our ASD. NTs have their own problems which I am perfectly happy not sharing.

Why don't we just find something that makes everyone a charismatic genius who everyone likes and who likes everyone and is just absolutely positively good at everything he/she/etc does while being completely comfortable with it yet having perfectly balanced self-esteem so they are never proud nor depressed? Why would we even need the rest of the human race? Oh...there goes socializing.

No it's not, nobody thinks AS is caused by damage to the right brain except you. NVLD might sometimes be caused by such damage, but it is NOT the same thing as AS.

I would love a cure for meltdown, sensory overload, etc.

Cure for autism? No thanks. I like myself.

Most of the people (NTs) are wired to replicate the thoughts of the people around them. These people tend to follow the herd, and while adaptable and capable of a high degree of cooperation which each other, they are more restricted and subjective in their views of the world. They tend to live in the "socially constructed reality" of socially constructed beliefs, values, prejudices and assumptions that they share, change and strengthen with each other.

I'm not saying that an NT automatically will have a good time, but they usually have an easier time adapting to change, to the other people and generally fitting in with the majority of the people (the other NTs), while on the flipside having a restricted ability to see a more comprehensive and neutral vision of the world, the ability required to solve more complex problems in the modern society.

Neurotypicality is a bit like the blue pill, and autism a bit like the red pill. I'm a little unsure which one I would choose if I could.

If there was something that could allow me to understand body language/facial expressions, make the social retardation go away, and basically make the worst symptoms go away, yes, I would take it. I'm not talking about a real cure: I'm just talking about something that would make my life easier.

I know that I can't be cured so it's no good me harping on about it. I just wish there was medication I could take, with no horrid side effects, what could help me just be more confident without me being weird at the same time, so in other words, knowing how to socialise without becoming too anxious or too shy, and just having the right things to say at the right times and so on. Just so I can be like a normal person without no vibes what people can pick up on.

I would go on anti-depressants, and I was determined at a time, but I am so frightened because so many people who have took them have said about side effects. Little side effects like getting frequent headaches doesn't worry me so much. It's more the things like nausea, diarrhoea and sleep difficulties that worry me. I am a good sleeper, and have a very healthy digestion, and I don't want that took away from me. Plus anti-depressants don't work miracles anyway, so by taking them I'm not going to magically turn into a confident person and not worry about the side effects.

I don't mean a pill that would turn me into a different person. I just wish there was one that helps with shyness, but doesn't make me into a hyper freak that scares people away.

The happiest times of my life have been experiences related to my special interests. When I develop a new intrerest, it's like falling in love. In fact, even better than falling in love ever was to me... If getting a cure means that I would lose this ability, then I do not want to be cured. Life without special interests would kill me.

I wish I could get help with my meltdowns and with other specific symptoms. But I would not want my sense of self to be changed...

This is what I just wrote in another thread, but it fits in better in here:

"Would curing autism mean that I would lose my special interests? That I would never be able to fall in love again with a new obsession (be it a new music or a new topic of interest)?

Would it mean that I would stop having synaesthesia, which helps me a lot with my writing?

Would it mean that I would feel miserable when I'm alone, instead of enjoying loneliness?

Would it mean that I would become shallow and I care more about other people's opinions about me than about the moral principles upon which I base my actions? Would it mean that I would live according to social conventions, rather than according to ethics?

Would I lose my sense of self and turn into another person?

If yes, then, as much as I hate my sensory issues, my sense of inadequacy, my inability to spend too much time with other people and my meltdowns, I don't think I would want to be cured..."

Your right AS is not cause by brain damage. But it might be cause by imbalance with the left side and right side brain.

I have severe sensory processing disorder. I wouldn't hesitate to be cured from it. I'm kind of over having sensitive senses. And synaesthesia too. Smelling memories is not always a good thing. Oh and cure my epilepsy, hypoglycaemia and maybe 80% of ADHD. I like having crazy thoughts and a lot of energy.

Autism is ok. I mean the social issues are hard but well my ADHD meds help a little with that. I love my special interests and all the other positive aspects of my autism.

I would like to be cured of all anxiety and depression too.

But the sensory issues are the worst. I can't function outside my home.
