Bump...
I'm sort of disappointed in the first episode of season 3...
Where's Aya, what about Briane of Tarth and the Kingslayer?
You'd think they would have the budget for fighting scenes rather than a blackened screen in the first scene of the episode.
I still think this will be a good season though.

I'm catching up. I'm halfway through the second season. If it wasn't for Peter Dinklage, I might have given up on the show. It's pretty brutal and barbaric and merciless. I got to the episode when the little sadistic King has one woman beat another...then I stopped and asked if this was "entertainment" or gratuitous sensationalism or what? There's only so much I can take -- it can be more perverse than "fun". Still, the imp (who has the most reason to be bitter and hateful) is a devilish hoot and the only character I enjoy watching...well, OK, I enjoy watching Daenerys too for different reasons...
Five years, I though maybe he had died or gotten very sick.
No, it turns out he was negotiating with HBO for the series and being given a contract changed how he wrote the new books. Instead of finishing the series in five books he has now written six and more are on the way, no definite end anymore.
Until the rating go down, then he will finish it.
I am of two minds on this.
One: I really enjoy reading these and as long as he keeps writing I will have fresh stories.
Two: A never ending soap opera has a good likelyhood of going stale with repetition. Perhaps a satisfying ending would be best.
Meanwhile I will buy all the new books and watch every episode of the series.
That's what I did too. I read all the books years ago and I learned the hard way not to get too attached to any one character. Couldn't finish Storm of Swords, though. I'm giving it another go this week. And I finally signed up for Netflix just so I could watch the shows. I don't have cable or decent internet access. I got the 1st 2 episodes of season 1 yesterday and I'm going to watche them tonight, even if I have to stay up 'til midnight.

I couldn't get past the first episode of season one.
The show had potential, but the gratuitous sex on screen made it a step above being called pornography. Not something I'd want to watch with the family.
Honestly, I think I counted 5 humping scenes in one hour...most of which didn't need to be so graphic to convey what was going on.

In the first episode, the Jaime/ Cersei scene was necessary because it's really the plot catalyst, and it's also necessary to establish that Tyrion
likes whores. He was married, but his family destroyed that marriage because his wife was lowborn, so, at this point in the story, whores are his only option.
To be honest, there are sex scenes throughout the whole series, and most of them with dubious plot legitimacy. This will never be a show to watch with your family, but, it is some of the best storytelling and characterisation that you will ever see.
Still, if you can't bring yourself to watch it, but you would like something similar, you might like Robert Graves, "I Claudius". It was a huge influence on ASOIAF, and all of the violence and sex is suggested.
I think Dinglage modelled his performance of Tyrion on Jacobi's, Claudius.
