with all respect, I think he was not the best choice for patton- no physical resemblance, voice was totally different than the real guy who had a somewhat effeminate voice. the original choice to play patton was rod steiger [MUCH closer resemblance and voice] but he was burned out from having just completed filming of "the sergeant" and didn't want "another GD war movie" so soon. so they went to lee marvin but the same story, he had just done "hell in the pacific" so he too passed, so their third choice was scott.

unfortunately it may well have contributed to the chronic depression that bedeviled him for the remainder of his days.
