Le DooM thread.

Satirical phrases (and obvious DooM fanboyism) aside, what level theme in DooM do you enjoy the most? Do you like the industrial brownish buildings of the Urban levels, or are you fond of seeing UAC bases placed in the Shores of Hell (aka Half-Tech, Half-Hell levels)?

There will be a poll for you to vote on if you decide to cast out your favorite theme. :P

Note: Starport is an option since I personally find it to be a unique techbase theme fitting DooM II. Just saying.

I was never attentive to the level design of Doom. I guess I thought of a Doom level as something like a race track when I was playing it. Maybe it's time for another look.

I'd almost say techbase, but my favorite Doom levels, aesthetically speaking, were probably the ones in The Shores of Hell, which combined techbase elements with more hellish elements.

Gameplay wise, I'm not sure. I find a lot of the levels past The Shores of Hell are more frustrating than fun, and Doom II is just insane. I managed to finish The Ultimate Doom on ultra-violence with no cheats and all keyboard controls on the Chocolate Doom port, but I've only made it maybe halfway through Doom II doing the same.

I always liked all the ornate wood textures, with the lion heads, the green marble, and the bookshelves, etc.

Not really a level theme, I guess.

To be honest, I was mainly talking about the level texture and design, not the level itself. :)
