I don't understand the point of dressing up for dinner. I mean, who wants to get their clothes dirty?

Good point!
Clean casual clothing is smart enough tbh

I've never grasp the concept of dinner parties, talking whilst eating a hot plate of food can be difficult lol.
I'd listen and eat at dinner parties but wouldn't want to talk whilst eating

I guess people want to impress others and feel superior on social occasions. It must be part of their social game.

Properly done, it facilitates social interaction between NTs.

I've never understood dressing up for dinner or fancy restaurants.

Dressy clothes are kind of uncomfortable and after eating food might be more comfortable, perhaps it is to limit the amount of food one eats.

I will not "dress up" for any situation. Not even a funeral. Casual clothing is the only clothing I own. I have only sports shoes, no hard leather and no boots. If someone expects me to wear fancy clothes to a function, then it is not me they want to share their time with. They want me to pose for them. I won't do it. I will not be a fake for anyone.

Growing up, there were occasions when my parents forced us to “dress up” for dinner. I never understood why. We also were required to “dress up” whenever we went to religious school or went on an airplane (which was not often).

I always found “dress up” clothes to be uncomfortable. So, I have done my best to avoid them as an adult.

This does seem to be the case. Though I am not altogether certain why.

My guesses, and these are only guesses:
-it allows them to visually establish their place in the social hierarchy- in terms of class, sexual attractiveness, and so on
-it allows them to scan the room to be sure they are among members of their own social strata, which perhaps helps put them at ease and gives them a sense of confidence, especially if, even among their own social strata, they are able to present themselves as somehow exemplary
-if they feel they're lacking in some way, they may feel they can cover up their lack with a nice outfit and nice hair and nails or whatever, which again would give them a sense of confidence, especially if they pass muster

As for why some families may choose to do this on a daily basis, my guesses are:
-it allows for a better separation of activities like work vs. home or school vs. home
-the clothes you've been in all day smell like you've been in them all day
