I was professionally diagnosed as an Aspie (though I had suspected it) after I sought medical attention for my startles; they have reached the point where if I am standing when I am startled, I fall, and even if I am sitting I do serious strains, sprains and breaks to my fingers, thumbs and ribs just from the intensity of the muscle contractions. I have also bitten my tongue, and shattered a tooth from being startled, and I apparently ripped my deltoid muscle off the insertion of the humerous when a "clown" intentionally startled me just to watch me jump. The only medical solution I have found so far is an epilepsy drug which decreases the intensity of the jerks.

Myself, I am rarely startled (probably as I am so reclusive that I don't often get into situations where I could be startled) although I do jump sometimes when the toaster pops up and the ring of the phone jangles my nerves. However, I tend to elicit a startled response from people as I am so quiet in my movements that they don't hear me walk up behind them. I'm always making members of my family practically jump out of their skins by doing this.

I annoys me sometimes... countless times I have walked into a room and said "Hello" a few minutes later, just to have whomever I was addressing scream bloody murder and demand to know where the hell I just came from.

I have that too. I think that's why people think I'm "aggressive". I once sat it class and my math teacher meant to play a joke by tapping my head lightly with a ruler. I reacted and stuck my hands out to defend myself and deflected the ruler. Other times, I turn around or jump at sudden or unexpected movements, and sometimes when people touch me, and I sometimes end up hurting them.

I think it might have something to do with my reflexes, but I do jump at certain things.

Physical pain is no problem for me - takes a lot for me to react strongly. I also react oddly to pain/discomfort a lot of times...laughing, smiling, pleasure. Tickle-ish things can be painful, and painful things can be tickle-ish. Go fig.

But, unexpected touches from people are a major problem - tapping me on the shoulder, brushing against me, even playful/joking stuff from friends/family. If I'm not mentally prepared for the contact, my first gut reaction is jumpy defensive anger. Most of the time I can hide that from the other person and recover in a split second, but the initial "hate reflex" is still stressful.

I'm not a fan of hugging - I'm prepared for it, so my initial reaction isn't horrible, but I just don't care for it. The emotional interaction of it makes me uncomfortable. On the other hand, hugging while making-out/having sex is comforting - but I (sadly) don't think it has anything to do with emotional connectivity...just a positive physical response.

Lots of sounds on a daily basis are horrible. Conversely, complete silence is equally anxietous.

Horror movies and haunted houses are total fun for me - I guess because I know something is coming, so I can respond appropriately and enjoy it. But for anyone to sneak up on me in real life...uh uh, no way.

unexpected touch/taps/sudden sounds make me jump...

although unexpected deep pressure touch or hugs is fine (provided its deep pressure or a tight hug) , you might get a very small resistance for a second and then i become very calm...

When in doubt, ask an autistic. Chances are, they're obsessed with what you need to know.
