"Brawndo! It's got electrolytes! It has the taste plants crave!"
Sorry, but that was the first thing that came to mind while reading that article.
But seriously, considering that most of the world's farm soil has to be artificially pumped up with petroleum based fertilizers and pesticides due to having been exhausted of nutrients after several centuries of uninterrupted cultivation, I can see the need for something like this. Three years before he died, my grandpa drove me and my mom to a nearby suburb to pick up a new car she'd bought with a small inheritance. I was along because gramps had a tendency to get lost. We were driving past a brand new housing tract, with earth moving equipment and other contractors hard at work, and he said something like "Look at all the good farmland being used for crappy houses. Someday, they'll be ripping down derelict, worthless houses to get at the land. I won't see it. Your mom probably won't. But you will."
