I want to know what goes through an autistic's mind that gives them a problem with eye contact to see if it is similar to me. Im not convinced Im on the spectrum but have problems with eye contact but have always put it down to paranoia and anxiety.

To me it's like shaking hands with a stranger who doesn't let go. I become increasingly anxious and start hoping for the moment I can break the "connection" and leave... a kind of feeling "trapped". It typically feels physically straining on the eyes, like looking at a bright light that I'm expected to maintain focus on. The strange part is this exercise is easier with some people and harder with others.

If I don't practice though, it gets tougher... just like maintaining muscle fitness. That's how it is for me.
