Addressing a rally on Saturday, he had said, "look at what's happening last night in Sweden", as he listed parts of Europe hit by terrorist attacks.
With no such incident reported in Sweden on Friday, the country asked the US administration for an explanation.
Mr Trump tweeted on Sunday that he had been referring to a TV report.
He said it had been broadcast on Fox News but did not say when. He may have been referring to a Fox News programme on Friday night, which looked at refugees and crime in Sweden.
Despite his words "happening last night in Sweden", White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said separately that Mr Trump had been talking about rising crime and recent incidents in general, not referring to a specific issue.
Former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt was among those who mocked Mr Trump's comment, suggesting that he had "been smoking".

Ironically if Trump had tweeted a remark that some prime minister was on drugs, the left would have gone completely apeshit over it.

Sweden's Prime Minister is driving his country into the ground, there will not be a Sweden 100 years from now at the pace they are at.

Seemed to have missed the point that trump (for the umpteenth time) got it wrong...there was no terrorist incident - he doesn't know how to choose his words

Unfortunately, Trump is not on drugs. If he was, he'd simply have to stop taking them, then he'd stop saying insane things. As he's probably certifiably insane, he'll keep spouting insane idiocy, regardless of sobriety.

So wait, was it a just flub because he's mindless, or was it a calculated psychological maneuver to instill fear? The whole he's both brainless and diabolically clever conundrum is quite confusing.

Trump shoots off his mouth without knowing all the facts. When he was just a loony celebrity pretending to be a billionaire with an obsession with tweeting insane things, that might have just been funny in a macabre way. But now that he's President of the United States, and leader of the free world, for him to be going off half cocked like that is nothing short of terrifying.

Obviously Trump isn't the only one to have missed the point, cause he never said there was a terrorist attack. You and others should sympathise with Trump a bit, because he believes everything he sees on TV or online too.

Trump clearly said there was an attack in "Sweden last night" when he talked! He can clarify all he wants, he still made the error and it won't fix things completely.

The president should know how to speak without having to clarify. Sorry we can't assume he meant something else, when he said LAST NIGHT! Last night = a reference to a certain time, not just some random blanket statement about troubles in the area or whatever.

One of the biggest problems with Trump is his ignorant big mouth. He takes a half truth- twists it how he sees fit. He takes a fact- twists it into his own meaning. He clearly states a lie and acts like it's true. He's the expert of the con, gaslighting and much more. It's clear Trump has no clue what is going on half the time. He would rather talk about himself and whine about his kids companies being treated badly, instead of REAL ISSUES- Flint, Michigan still doesn't have clean water, many oil spills in USA haven't been cleaned up, etc.

At zoos the world over, signs are posted which state, "don't poke the (tigers, lions or bears)" because the alternative might not be beneficial to the poker(s). In politics, the same statement is used to warn others from getting the leader's attention through hostile or insulting means. Whether President Trump was correct or not, watch for Sweden to become the next big "who?!?" around the White House.

No he did not say that. You're either blatantly lying or haven't even bothered to watch the video. I'd pay more attention to yourself before you start accusing people of the same things that you do, in the same post!!

Let's see something to back that up. I guess you have a racist definition of what Sweden is, but I'd like to hear it right out in the open.

Also, I watched the filmmaker being interviewed. He had one big lie and kept repeating it. People will have a little difficulty understanding how that dude is manipulating statistics, if they are morons.

Is it not true that only 500 of 160k refugees are working in Sweden? Do you see that a successful immigration policy? You are brainwashed to have this knee jerk reaction to label anything that isn't politically correct as racist, it clouds your thinking beyond all reason when it comes to dealing with real issues with immigration. There is an absolute refusal to acknowledge that problems exist at all and you'll be lied to and shamed if you dare disagree with this mandated "enlightenment."

Labeling anything that isn't politically correct as racist is a tactic that the left uses in an attempt to intimidate, shut down, or shut up anyone who dares have a different opinion.
