I know it sounds stupid but seeing an ambulance, police car or fire engine coming along with it's blue lights flashing is pure fear for me because it means the siren might sound any minute, and it's so loud and sudden it makes me a nervous wreck. It's worse than the siren already being on as it passes. I'm more sensitive to SUDDEN loud noise, not continuous loud noise.

The anticipation really plays on my nerves, and as a vehicle with flashing blue lights is coming towards me, my heart literally stops for a few seconds, because of the overwhelming feeling of anticipation and pure fright of the possibility of the siren sounding as it passes me.

Putting my fingers in my ears would be the only way to handle it, or using some sort of noise-cancelling headphones...but that would scream autism and I don't want to "look autistic", if that makes sense.

But anyway, how do you handle sudden loud noises of sirens when outside in the city or a street or whatever?

Hmm, I don't get scared I just get angry, dunno why - probs cause it's an inconvenience. I used to find it unpleasant because it was a sudden loud noise but after years of being a metalhead I learned to overcome this pretty easily by throwing myself into loud noise places a lot.

The sound of sirens from a distance is very irritating to me.
When they suddenly start up a siren nearby it's upsetting.
If they already have sirens going and are coming towards me, I plug my ears.

Whereas I live in a house near the forest, and it takes far less than a siren to make me jump like a rabbit.

I very rarely hear sirens where I live. I did have a police car use its siren the other day and I had to pull over to let it past but this was the first time I'd heard one in weeks. It doesn't freak me out but I always seem to have trouble locating which direction the siren is coming from. Car alarms, on the other hand, are evil!

Yes. I get afraid when I see one of them coming in case they switch on their siren as they go by me. It's quite bad when they approach with it already on too, but the sudden noise is worse. I bring my fingers up to my ears, ready to stuff them in.

It probably looks kind of funny. :D

Sirens in the UK used to sound European. But now they copy North America.

No, I don't care about the sound of sirens at all. It just makes me curious about what's going on.

Sirens don't entirely freak me out unless it's close by. However, things like doors being slammed (or closed loudly), fire alarms, and motorcycles make me quite distressed. Also, the skype ringing noise. That one is probably the worst for me.

Yes. When I was a kid fire engine sirens used to go nee-naw-nee-naw but now they do the other noise (can't think how to express that noise in English). :)

I'm really sensitive to sudden loud noises, too, even ongoing loud noise; heck, any loud noise I'm sensitive to. I deal with sirens all the time where I live. That's probably because I live just a couple of blocks away from not one, but two hospitals. So there's constant sirens going past the building I'm living in. Especially if I see a fire truck coming, even though it's siren is already going, I find myself plugging my ears because of the anticipation of the horn going off, which is even louder than the siren. And if people see me plugging my ears and wonder what's wrong with me, I don't really care. They can think what they want.
