Yes indeed, the heading for the thread was intended sensu lato, without regard to monophyly. I thought of calling it "Cryptogam appreciation thread" but that seemed too obscure. :-)

So slime molds, even pulsating slime molds, definitely count!

yay!

i can't see embedded videos...so will probably miss out on pulsating, slimy goodness.

of course, no fungus thread is complete without this mycorrhizal beauty, hydnellum peckii.

It's norwegian name, directly translated is: "stench mushroom"
I once detected one with my nose, before my eyes.

I'll see your Hydnellum peckii and raise you a Clathrus archeri. (If they actually moved this fast in nature they would be totally creepy.)

Found all these last fall.Found a Lions Mane but didn't take a pic.I intended to go back for it and have it for dinner but forgot.Lots of Oyster Mushrooms were out.Ive inoculated two logs with Oyster and Shitake using the dowls that have spores in them.I hope it works.Drilling all those holes was a real pain.
Indian Pipes, beautiful and there is a whole colony of them in the woods by the house!
Jack O'Lanterns.People confuse them with Chanterelles becuse of the color. They are toxic, they are also suppose to glow at night but I haven't observed this.
Witch's Tit,do not ingest.
King's Coral.Tasty,I harvested all these this fall.ImageImageImage

I pluck these (Hydnum rufescens) and fry them with chanterelles. They taste similar.

Indian Pipes are some of my favorite plants. There are a few colonies in my neighborhood too. They are flowering plants (the ones in the picture are in full bloom) that are myco-heterotrophs: they are parasites on Russula mushrooms that are symbionts with trees. So the tree makes its own food from light and air, which it then shares with the mushroom in exchange for some vitamins, and then the Indian Pipe steals the food from the mushroom.

(If this were PPR, I'd say, "So, they're a Democrat-type plant." But this isn't, so I won't.) 8)
