If someone (not a romantic relationship) betrays your trust and hurts you deeply, making you lose something that was very important to you, through no wrong on your part, and then they say: "I really hope we can remain in friendly terms" (probably meaning "Please don't take revenge"), what do you answer?

Ask them if they've ever heard the proverb "Revenge is a dish best served cold." Then smile and walk away.

Benjamin, what does that mean? That they should watch their backs in the least expected moment?

Yes, just to scare them a bit... not that you have to actually carry out the revenge.

What did the guy take from you, anyway?

Did you co-sign on a loan with him? Did he skip with the money, leaving you to pay back the loan?

That happened to me once.

You could be "professional" while making it clear that it will be a while until they earn your trust back (if they can). It depends on what they did.

There's too many variables here. As in, it depends on what they actually did and in what context. It's good to set boundaries with people, but they need to be attenuated to the situation at hand.
