Why does society make a big deal out of sex?
It seems that sex is in our face everywhere we go. We hear it in songs, see it on television, in movies, advertisements, and many other places. I often hear the saying that "sex sells." It seems like companies only appeal to heterosexual people. They act like everyone is straight and all men are horny for boobs and all women are horny for big, tough men. They seem to forget that there are more sexualities out there than just hetero. I think that sex is overrated and the media puts much more emphasis on it than it needs. The media says that if you aren't having it you are a lonely loser who is missing out. The media portrays sex as a game that we should all be playing. Sex should be taken seriously and it should not be messed around with. You should only have it when you are mature enough and ready with the person you love. You shouldn't just have it with random people and not use protection. Sex leads to unwanted pregnancies and STDs if you are not careful. I think all of this sex constantly in our face is a bit too much. Not everyone is hetero and desires the same thing. Sex can ruin your life if you aren't careful. I don't understand what our culture's obsession with sex is. There is more to life than sex and sex should not be treated as a sport or a game. It should be taken seriously.
My answer to the question of Why? goes deep in to the spiritual realm of the contest between God and not God.Which is probably a belief shared by so few that I probably shouldn't have bothered taking the time to mention it.
Basically, that which is not God gets its jollies from mocking, distorting, devaluing, on up to destroying, that which was given by, created by, God, and it accomplishes that by spiritually influencing human beliefs and behavior.

Shocking sells, and sex used to be shocking and thus used to sell. I suppose it still sells to a point, but I think the media overestimates it. Once you have seen one female singer in a skimpy outfit, you've pretty much seen them all in a skimpy outfit. I don't think their sales would drop much if they were dressed more modestly, in fact, they might even increase. I happen to know that a good part of the U.S. actually finds mainstream media too risque. For example, this ad below was deemed immoral by North Dakotans because it was combined with the slogan "“Dinner. Drinks. Decisions. Arrive a guest. Leave a legend.”" and North Dakotans thought it was sexually suggestive.
Though someone from a more liberal area would think that were absolutely silly.
Meanwhile in Las Vegas...
But of course in the instance of Las Vegas, they are literally selling sex.
TBH I was very disappointed with sex when it happened to me for the first time.
I thought: so much desire, poetry, advertisements, songs etc. - to this? It didn't make sense to me. Sticking to the poetry gave me much more pleasure.
But I'm not very sensual, more abstract contcepts like relationships appeal to me much more.

You should move to the UK, watching the TV here you'd think half the population was gay, they are very much over-represented.
Look at most of the threads here and it seems most people think the same.
Most people are hetero and driven by sexual desires, so advertisers\the media target those people. I'm not sure what that's such a mystery.

Because this is an autism support forum and those on the spectrum don't reflect the average person.

That doesn't stop you appreciating that you're not the normal person though so society shouldn't bend to your desires.

No, but it does mean some people here can't see why everyone likes sex so much.
Agreed, but I didn't question that and the thread isn't about what is great about sex, it's about why society makes such a big deal out of it.
Society makes such a big deal about it because most people really like sex.
Humans are hardly atypical. Male lions spend most of their effort winning and defending a pride of females. Some male spiders risk literally being eaten alive to mate. Male birds spend huge amounts of energy building elaborate nests, doing complex mating dances, or maintaining extravagant and otherwise less-than-useless plumage. Not to mention the enormous investment that females of most species make in pregnancy and/or raising offspring. It's all about survival of the species.

The businesses involved can make a profit from ads featuring sexy looking women (both realistic and non-realistic looking), porn, strip clubs, anything sex related. They don't care what consequences it has on anyone. All they really care about is the money.
