Conservatism or Socialism ? I ask because many on the political right argue that Socialism is a mental illness.

They're political ideologies, not mental illnesses.

The "illness" could be in how a person INTERPRETS and ACTS UPON their interpretation of both ideologies.

One can be a nutty Socialist, and a sensible Alt-Righter, and vice versa.

I'd say both are political movements, and people ought to be less hysterical. It could be argued that religion is a mental illness, though, and sometimes people take politics to the level of religion.

Q:Which do you think is more a mental illness?:
A: How far an extremist is the person on the one side who is looking at and judging the other side?

Sorry, mate, but that question is rational only in the distorted realities inhabited by extremists.

Mental illness is defined by some in a nutshell as the inability to think rationally.. so... political bigotry which ignores all evidence but that which fits over-riding prejudice.. could be said to be irrational... this would make a great number of people "mentally ill" it seems!

Youthful leftist activism overwhelmingly caters to the emotional needs of the individual, which tends to involve the distortion of reality.
I.E. Reason, facts and practicality take a back seat to emotional gratification and a righteous/moral philosophical position...
Ipso facto and by definition, of the two, socialism would lean towards greater mental illness...
Simples... ;)

I feel the majority of people are fiscally conservative and socially liberal so there is actually truth in both philosophies.

Religion is actually another form of dissociative state...
Ipso facto, it is out of touch with reality...

Neurotypical society as a whole is disconnected from reality due to it's inordinate dependency/allegiance to emotional, as opposed to intellectual, needs...
In essence, neurotypicals profoundly embrace/indulge the/in-the concept of the emotionalisation of the truth...

Whenever emotionalism enters the equation, the connectedness with actuality/truth/reality is weakened in virtually all areas...
Ironically however, those who engage in emotionalism connect with the truth of their emotional state...
You could say neurotypicals, and particularly socialist neurotypicals, profoundly embrace the "science of emotional insanity"...

I'd argue if you're on the right and insisting 'liberalism is a mental disorder', you're mentally ill.
I'd argue if you're on the left and insisting 'conservatism is a mental disorder', you're mentally ill.

Guess which one I encounter far more often.

Or correctly:

Quote:
Mr. Batbie, in a much-celebrated letter, once quoted the Burke paradox in order to account for his bizarre political shifts: “He who is not a républicain at twenty compels one to doubt the generosity of his heart; but he who, after thirty, persists, compels one to doubt the soundness of his mind.”

To assert that either is an illness in any form is silly.

Fanaticism is toxic, though it isn't a mental illness AFAIK

I'd rather not put conservatism on the level of a mental illness. Nostalgia isn't a mental illness. It's a fairly typical human weakness.

Socialism? Definitely not a mental illness. ... though the authoritarian forms of socialism can be cultish in nature.

This is trash.

People who say this are people who dabbled in politics in their youth, but never explored politcs in-depth.
Noam Chomsky is still on the far-left. He's university educated. He's 88. Bernie Sanders is 76.

This is often true. Oftentimes, leftist youths will make sub-standard arguments in favor of reasonable positions ... because they are dumb kids who don't understand politics very well.

For conservatism, this is always true. I've tried arguing with conservatives. They will usually throw non-arguments at me.

My parents are an exception. I calmly told them about the military-industrial complex ... and now they don't consider themselves conservative anymore!

Are we going to reject evolution just because most people who believe in evolution have a tough time explaining it?

The most popular politician in America right now is Sanders, so you are wrong.
