I think Ms are in it for the money because after 30 years their operating systems still crash and fail

They're effectively a monopoly. They starve out small, fast, competent competitors left and right, or buy them out. They don't care because they don't have to. The EU has smacked them around a bit, which was nice for Schadenfreude but didn't help US customers much.
