Most people in control of the world are psychopaths, it's as simple as that. This world is just stupid.
I think some element of sociopathy/psychopathy feeds the drive of many driven to climb social ladders - its a well known fact that to have leadership qualities you need to have limits on empathy as otherwise you can't get anything done if you are worrying about meeting everyone's needs.
Of course that leaves the door open to megalomaniacs with high levels of socio/psychopathy becoming leaders...I know I've worked for plenty of them in my time
