I have seen many posts today on my FB posted by local Christians of "Happy Women's day"....with a picture of Virgin Mary and some quote.

Is Mary a good "Women's right" figure? Why so? What did she do to the women's status?

Not really.

I've read the Bible. Mary gave birth to Jesus and then didn't do much else.

Before humans believed in Mary, they believed in various fertility goddesses.

Mary was even less important than archaic mother goddesses like Gaia. At least Gaia was divine. Mary was a mere mortal.

In Christianity, there are no female divine beings as far as I know. Even angels were originally male.

The very fact that virginity is considered such an important part of her figure is basically the opposite of feminism.

Probably not a good "feminist" symbol.

But definitely a good image as far as being a "steadfast, virtuous" woman is concerned.

She's more along the lines of the "Victorian ideal," which combined strength and subservience.

I believe in the "strength" aspect, but not the "subservient" aspect.

What strength aspect? What did she even do?

She gave birth to Jesus, but that was completely out of her control.

After that, the Bible mostly ignores her, as though her only purpose was to give birth to Jesus.

First of all, thanks for reminding me today, that it is International
Woman's Day; not sure I'll have anyone to Give Thanks for this for most of the
Current Women I interact in words with outside my home are Muslim and they cherish the more
Traditional Roles of Marriage; and welcome a more subservient role; as true, many Women do in so-called
Traditional Marriages, too. True though, I do know at least, one Southern Baptist very open minded Pastor's
Wife, who will not mind it all for she is conservative and liberal in many other ways too; If I happen to talk to
her today, I'm sure I will not offend her by Wishing her a Wonderful International Woman's Day.

While it's true, the Bible itself in the scriptures as currently reported do not give the Virgin Mary
much of a role to play except for the interpretations that make her a recipient of a God Seed of
Begotten not made Birth; the Catholic Church Gives the Virgin Mary a Huge role to play as Hadith's
in Islam Religions bring about more importance to experiences that are not directly included in that
Koran text, either.

I must say, I am glad my Mother patterned herself as an all giving Loving Mother as the Catholic
Church portrayed of the Virgin Mary. That was really nice; as long as I didn't break any Catholic rules
for the shame of that; for I became a Very Good Catholic Boy as that goes too. But I really wasn't that nice
for I developed the same expectations as I now will truthfully admit back then; taking the Virgin Mary literally
meant every Woman I would date would have to be a whole lot literally like the Virgin Mary, and my Mother too.

Big mistake; Huge mistake; as the myth doesn't match the reality of Womanhood free at all when
set free as such as Women really were then and still are today. Rude Awakening for me and sure
the social difficulties of a reciprocal social communication challenge didn't help that either.

Anyway, we have the Catholic Church to give thanks for that if we want to Thank it at all but
still as far as Mother's Go, overall that's a Good Kinda Mother to have. Not all folks get
loved like that; True, a little too attached to the Apron Strings; but I did finally learn
how to Unconditionally Love a Woman and keep a marriage going for 28
years, now. And interestingly enough; what I've found is, if you Love
A Woman enough they retain a Virginal Youth of Love that
can and will not be compromised as such, at least for now.

As always with facts and myths; there are many pluses
and minuses; if one does their homework; both in book
work and real life too. Case studies are important too.

I Just told my Wife, Happy International Woman's Day;
And she sort of went meh; like she is already worshipped like a Goddess2; heHe.
It's true, many Women Do Love to be Worshipped by their Men like a Virgin Mary/Egyptian Goddess Isis2;
In fAct, it may manifest itself; or perhaps better put, womanifest almost like a self-fulfilling Prophecy as such.
Even the Southern Baptist Pastor's Wife says this is true; at least in Case Study evidence, per current purview..:)

I recall now thst in the Islamic version of “Mary’s biography” -
It was said that she, when was a teen, was the first female who dared to pray inside the Jewish temple, defying courageously the rabbis’ outrage.

That’s the only “feminist” act I can recall about her.

Mary didn't choose to have Jesus. Jesus was put inside her without her consent.

The rest happened naturally. It's not like she built Jesus herself. She didn't use any brainpower to have Jesus.

Additionally, most Christians believe that, as Jesus was an avatar of God, he didn't even possess any of Mary's DNA.

Being good at having kids doesn't make you a feminist icon. Even the most extreme misogynists will usually admit that women are good at having kids.

If Mary is a feminist icon, we might as well call Phyllis Schlafly a feminist icon.

... or we could save those sorts of labels for women who actually did great things using their own intelligence and free will.

On International Women's Day, I'd rather celebrate Helen Keller, Emma Goldman and Boudica.

Many men back in Mary's day, even before then, believed that males are superior, while women were raised to be inferior, otherwise, women were accused of practicing witchcraft. -_- What, seriously?

Personally, I do not agree with this logic. Real "feminism" is about men and women being treated like equals, and balance out the attributes on what's considered "manly" and "girly". But, that's just my opinion.

There's a whole documentary on Netflix about why people see the Virgin Mary as a feminist figure.

A lot of women actually ignore the virgin aspect and see her as a single mother who lived for her child.

God raped Mary while she was already married and other than giving birth to Jesus she didn't do much of anything, and the Bible is very misandrist, so no. I would rather look up to *real* women who are strong, like my mother.

I don't think so, I mean she is known as the mother of Jesus...meaning she is known for giving birth to their 'savior' figure. Like she is not important due to anything she really did or accomplished just who she gave birth to, so no doesn't seem like a very good fit. If it was International Uterus day or International Mothers day than she'd be a good figure for that.

If Mary was 'raped by God' that is not her fault and she should not be disregarded as a feminist figure because of it. If anything she can then be classified as a survivor of sexual abuse.

Intersectional feminism teaches that feminism is different for everybody. My aunt's feminism consisted of chastity once she was divorced and being very religious and ambitious in her career. She was a very successful single mother but she was also virulently homophobic. My point is one woman's feminist is another woman's oppressor, so it's good not to be on either extreme end.
