I think sharing a hobby or two is one piece of the puzzle. Having an interest in your partner is what you're describing, really. After a certain point the hobbies don't become as important as something like your partner coming home after a long day and you genuinely want to know and listen to how their day was. Hobbies become a way to reconnect from the daily grind of life, and usually you'll only need one or two that you both want to do together. Having interests outside of your partner's is also a good thing and shouldn't be overlooked too.

I know of at least one woman here who is very much into model railroads.

I had a professor once (a woman) who built her own train and "regular gauge" track.

One woman here?

if i had me one of those king setups where a whole room was a miniature village or town with the model trains and automobiles intersecting on the roads, and smoke [steam] coming out of smoke stacks and all the sound fx, i would definitely be stoked and find myself "playing god" so to speak. but i could not afford anything like that and my tin can is far too small even for a tiny model train setup. so what i do is digital signal processing of problem audio in the hopes of restoring it to what it originally sounded like in the studio before the sound was corrupted by impression into noisy shellac or modulated onto hissy magnetic tape.

Nice...

Trains need not take up a lot of space though.

Not a problem. My trains turn 180 degrees on a 2ft wide board. The board need not be 2ft wide except in places.

There was a guy comedian(I forget who) who joked that woman want guys to participate in their hobbies with them. Whereas guys have hobbies to get a break from spending time with women. I'm guessing that joke is based on the sterotype that women are more needy & clingy than guys are. I don't conform to gender sterotypes thou & neither does my girlfriend. I never really considered hobbies a factor when trying to get a relationship. I believe the one hobby both partners need to share is the desire to spend time with each other. As I explained in my other post in this thread, you can spend time together while both indulging in your hobbies by yourself. You can keep each other company & talk some while doing your own thing.
