If the person was observing Lent for the other 325 days a year, and it was a hardship or sacrifice for them to give it up, I suppose they could give up Lent for Lent.

That nearly works, but if observing Lent is about making sacrifices that hurt, then giving it up for Lent would be a pleasant relief, and so it wouldn't count as a painful sacrifice.

I did once remark to somebody that I'd do well at Lent because fasting doesn't bother me so I'd be really good at it. But my listener angrily replied that it was supposed to be a punishment.

It wouldn't be a pleasant relief if the person was such a masochist as to deprive themselves year-round, enjoying it.

^^

I don't fast for Lent for the same reasons you state.
I don't eat enough on a regular basis for it to matter.
I give up all drinks except water, and choose other things from my life that are harder to forgo.

Ah, that could work. They could wear a really comfortable shirt during Lent.

Yes, and remove the steel spikes from their beds.

Sigh. :(
