Am not a software pirater, but do use bit torrent and limewire to download DJ/radio mixes, and also record/store radio shows such as the essential selection, onto a sky+ set top box.

Open source software is too good to ignore anyway.

Software developers should be flattered that their product is being pirated.

Yeah, I'm always flattered when people think I've got such nice things in my house that they have to break in and steal them.

i would be flattered if you wanted to go to the library to check out a copy of a book i wrote. i wouldn't even mind if you went back later and checked it out again, should reading it once not be enough for you. if someone broke into your house and stole your nice things, then something on your house would be broken and you'd be missing some nice things, which is completely different then you not paying me to read words i wrote, or to excecute code i wrote, or to appreciate a song i wrote.

information wants to be free. television corporations want you to believe that fast-forwarding thru the commercials on dvr is stealing.

I agree. Copyright infringement is not theft. It doesn't cause a loss, it just doesn't cause a gain.

Most programs have good free alternatives except there isn't really any good anti-virus freeware, AVG and avast are both useless.

Some examples of piracy/copyright infringement that I think was warranted;

1. Pirating Star Wars on DVD when you already owned the Video in the years when George was refusing to release it. Now, of course, it's pirating.

2. Pirating the Star Wars Holiday Special Anytime - since you're not depriving anyone of any revenue.

3. Pirating Michael Mann's "The Keep" since he's refusing to release it.

4. Copying stuff off the web for personal storage, since the web is a volatile and "free".

5. Pirating copies of DOS, Ultima IV, Windows 3.1 etc... since you can't buy these now.

When in doubt, ask an autistic. Chances are, they're obsessed with what you need to know.

I didn't say I actually HAD pirated those things...

most of them I own.

I'd love to get a copy of "The Keep" on DVD though.

Damn... that's a film that deserves a remake.

Pretty much all the software I used to own was pirated, since I was a teenager and it didn't seem that bad at the time. Only after I started looking at game development myself and saw the amount of work involved that I honestly felt bad about it. It is stealing, plain and simple.

People complain about a lack of indie games etc but if you are only going to sell a few thousand copies for a small profit, and this figure gets chopped in half because of piracy, it hurts, and convinces people it is better to work for others than try sell your own new products.

I don't think I have ever paid for a piece of software in the last 4 years when intended for personal use... All my business software is paid for though...
I pirate so much... I have 1TB of storage at home, and it's nearly full... I delete useless things or outdated things, otherwise I'd have a few TB by now.

Now I have licenzed Windows XP (aka MAZDAI) and trying not to use pirated software at all. E.g. it is easy not to use WinZip, Nero, Photoshop, Windows Commander, Visual Studio - there are nice free and freeware software. Sometimes I have to use "unofficial" software ;)

I fully agree with it - but it is hard to really replace MS Office, especially if you need to exchange documents with formula. Linux is cool stuff, but earlier versions of it are definetly oriented on the mentality of Soviet people (it was even "born" in the year of USSR decay) - good inside but without design and in the style "users are not kings, they are clever and will customize and modify". It is glad to see that latest versions of Linux are much more user friendly.

Anti-virus software is not too expensive, e.g. Kaspersky or Dr.Web are rather cheap. Some not free software is very hard to replace - e.g. MATLAB. Several years ago I bought a hex-editor by SEN - because it is much better than free "clones".

I wouldnt call myself a pirate.. The only software I downloaded was photoshop but I dont actually use it. I am not good at making pictures and a demo couldve told me that so it is like a demo to me. :)

I have downloaded and watched most of star trek DS9.. I am about half way through watching series 4 but I have no need to keep these. I would watch it on TV but too many people in my house make it impossible to watch a series without missing some. I will download and watch voyager, heroes, battlestar galactica series too.

What I watch is available on TV.. I would never spend £200 on a series so they dont lose out on money and I dont intend to keep what I download or distribute I like to free up my hard drive.

I have downloaded movies too. A few I downloaded and liked enough to want the DVD and ask for it for xmas. The real problem is the movies, games, software and music industrys are too greedy. I spend as much as I can afford on their products and always will. But they shouldnt get angry at me for wanting more for my money.
