Opening a file with the extension .wps

My mom sent me a file via email and it has the .wps extension. I only have Microsoft Word on my computer. I'm not 100% sure but i think the .wps extension is a Microsoft Works file. I saved the file to my computer as a .doc file and then tried opening it in Microsoft word, I was prompted to install a file converter so i did that and when i finally got the file open there was just a bunch of boxes instead of actual text.
Microsoft's own products don't even seem to be compatiable with each other.

My question is how do i open the .wps extension without having to buy and download Microsoft Works.

According to Wikipedia, WPS is indeed the format for Microsoft Works.


Have you tried opening the file in Notepad or Wordpad?

If that doesn't work, try using ZAMZAR to convert the file to a usable format.

There's a word viewer free from microsoft that will open wps files

I got it to work using zamzar.
