I like python too. I think we'll see a lot more python being used for different things in the future. It's so much easier to write correct, reliable code.

Performance is less than other languages, but for the most part it doesn't matter, really. And as new versions of python interpreters improve the speed, all python applications in the world run faster, so really I don't think the speed is that important an issue in most programs.

Especially since Python has Google's support.

Anyone develop for the web with python?

I'm looking at picking up a language but im not sure whether to go with PHP, Python or Flex.

One of the most persisting languages... COBOL

It feels a bit like myself. Sometimes too logical, when used wrong able to make a mess, can be extremely creative and powerful.

Alot of folks here seem to like Python.
To the folks who do,
Why do you like Python?
And what is it good for?

My favourite languages are C/C++ (effective low-level and system programming) and MATLAB (rapid programming of scientific tasks).

Esotherical languages are really funny. I like "classical" BF and its quantum version QBF (Quantum BrainF**k).

I'm surprised nobody mentioned my personal favorite Perl. don't we have any Perl hackers on WP at all?

next to Perl my next favorite language would be expect which runs on top of TCL and is a wonderful way to automate interactive terminal programs.

I can do quick and dirty hacks in C when I need to but most of the time I like a high level language like Perl.

I like Perl because I do a lot of database and text processing work and Perl is the perfect tool for the job. I also love Perl because of CPAN you can pretty much find a CPAN module that does anything you could possibly dream of
and even a few things you never wanted to do but found yourself needing in a screwed up situation.

Basically because it was no longer C :)

First language with strong typing and OO implemented that I learned.

That and I find it quite easy to pick up what is going on in a certain segment of code when reading ADA than I do any other language. It's use of plain English for a lot of operations is probably its most endearing quality.

Especially seeing as it's Anthropology and not programming (or computers) that is my perseveration, ADA is a lot easier to use for the tasks I use a computer for.
