Ok, the other night when I was working, (I work nightshifts at a warehouse that's next to a bagel factory.) I appeared disoriented and confused to a lot of my coworkers. Everything felt "normal" in terms of my mental and emotional abilities, and the first part of the shift went fine. (I work 12 hours in a shift.) However, during the second part of the shift, I somehow felt more confused than usual, and I kept on asking questions to my coworkers, however, they were just questions to clarify something, such as "Do I put these boxes over here?" or "Should I take this wasted product to the compactor?".

Eventually one of my coworkers asked me if I was "high". I replied "No, are you joking?", and he said "No, I'm being serious, you seem really out of it tonight." A couple of times he got fed up with me and yelled at me and swore when telling me what to do, for example, "No, you put it in the f*****g freezer!" or "Unload the f*****g truck!".

I've worked with this person before for about a week, and every past workday has been fine, except the last time I worked.

Any advice on what to do?

(Also, this is sort of unrelated, but I have a "theory" on why I was so confused that night, I took a generic form of my anti-depressent medication instead of the "company regular" one. Would that have anything to do with it? I take Adderall 60mg for ADD and Effexxor 300mg for depression)

No clues but does your boss know about your ADD?

I told mine and I believe they were happy to know there was a good reason for my 'special ways'.
Of course, I work in a hospital, so I hope they would be understanding of something like this.

You might want to talk to your boss (depending on your work environment and relationship with the company) so you don't get pegged as a druggie.

I can sympathize with your issue. I was recently at my brother's wedding. Several of my brother's friends (of the alternative hippie type) came to my brother and said "No way! You have acid here!". To this my brother responded "No". They said "That guy over there has gotta be on acid!", to which they pointed to me. My brother relayed this information to me some time afterwards. I then was able to explain my sensory integration disorder to him.

If they really do think you're on drugs, like if they keep mentioning it or asking you, you might offer to take a drug test. If you're taking prescribed medication you can tell the drug testing company and they won't (shouldn't) disclose it to your employer.

Use a marijuana-smoke infused cologne, as well.

lepher,

Could it be you are having absense seizures? It is actually quite common in AS people. It happens to me at work sometimes too and I have to take a few moments to "collect my thoughts".

In the past I too made impressions unknowingly to employers and colleagues that I was out to lunch when in fact I was a sober as a judge. The outcome has resulted both in my being blacklisted for any advancement and in dismissal without justification. That was before I was formally DX'ed.

In this time of my life of knowing the tic and its nature, I've had the good fortune of educating my superiors and my colleagues about it and the result has been an understanding and respect such as I've never known before in any work place. My present employer is the first I ever had that truly recognizes me as a contributor to its success.

Would you consider educating your superiors and your colleagues about it? If they can't accept you for who you are, then you might think about whether or not you want to invest anymore of yourself with your employer.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

People have often accused me of being drunk or high. Oddly enough, when I do get drunk, nobody can tell, not even my husband.
Way back in high school, people were always coming up to me and asking "Can I buy some whatever you're on?" They never believed me when I said I wasn't on anything. Hell, I wouldn't have believed me either some days.

People thought that about me too. 8O

Been there!

at work, at school and even at church they've told me if I did drugs.
I've noticed that when I'm tired I tend to be clumsy and when there's noise and lights I tend to get anxious.

I would recommend you to go to work well rested and fed, don't drink cofee, do excersize, etc.
and if is possible explain to you supervisor why you act the way you do it.
it's important that they know, its your future. Even if you change jobs, you will need recommendations to get other jobs.

You might be surprised at the result of that. I seem more drunk or stoned when I am completely sober than when I actually am drunk or stoned. Maybe you should start taking drugs and then they'll think you're normal. Ok bad advice, but it might work. 8O

If you're challenged about it, offer to take a drug test. Make sure that it's a chain-of-custody collection (everyone that that handles the specimen has to sign for it) and that the specimen is split into two containers (2nd one for confirmation if the first is positive) and sealed in front of you. If it's too long ago for drugs to still show up in urine, you can have a hair test.

Any chance you're hypoglycemic? I neither drink nor do drugs of any flavor - not even caffinated soda - and I've been asked if I was drunk or high when I forgot to eat for too long.

I've been accused of that on occasion. When someone accuses me of being on drugs, I usually say something like "yeah, I wish" in a sarcastic voice. The sarcasm and the "I wish" statement are usually enough to convince the person that they're mistaken.
