Just be empathetic, you don't have to change. If you're scared of what people might do, then that's just it. People will probably be offended if it's overt but that's up to you and whether you feel comfortable It has happened around me and I'm usually not offended unless there's disrespect directed...

I understand the desire to bring light to issues that you care about. I have issues that I care about as well. However, you can't just demand money from random people. Maybe the people who performed hate crimes might have to do something to make amends, but why do strangers have to pay?
