Thanks for sharing -- I have really been there, and I'm there now. I agree it's tough to see a way out when you're in the middle of it. I usually think I'm doing just fine until suddenly I can't speak proper sentences or I realize my vision has gone wonky. Then, there's nothing for it but sleep alte...

Wow, yes, good advice. Another reason why "high functioning" is a myth. It's really just borrowed time, and that time isn't an infinite resource.

Early retirement seems like a good idea -- I should look into that.

Thanks, and take care.

After a stressful couple weeks at my professional job, I am just on the point of shutting down. I just have to fight through another day and a half, and then I can spend my vacation recovering. I honestly don't know if I can manage it -- my vision is getting blurry and I'm struggling to speak words....

So, I'm a fan of the show, but boy was I surprised to see a very hack representation of an autistic man near the end of season 3. The character's name is "Zach" and he does things like walking into a room and loudly pointing and counting people then walking away -- Rainman style -- and han...

Strange -- I just got sicker when I went on Paleo. I guess we really are all very different! Thanks for sharing. :)

I have a very social job and a husband who does not (so he likes talking when I get home), and I used to go into shutdown every day, around lunchtime or end of the work day. For years. For a few months now, I've managed to avoid this pretty consistently. A few things have helped me: 1. Meditation. I...

Ah, OK, I get it now. Thanks! So strange a search didn't bring them up! These sound awesome...but where can I see them? I don't see an attachment, and searching the forum doesn't bring them up either. Am I missing something?

OK, politics aside, just on ASD issues here. If you want to talk politics, that's elsewhere on the forum. I went to the march in DC yesterday, which had an estimated 500,000 people. I WAS FINE. It was crazy. At one point I was boxed in so I couldn't even move, for about over an hour. I started panic...

Yes -- dealing with people without the mask is not easy. For me, it was almost a full-time job for several years to figure this stuff out. And when I get burned out from stress or too much social interaction, I can't manage much of anything. A big part of this for me has been to be honest about my l...

I can't solve the problems of the world. But what I can say is that this goes far beyond what we experience -- humans attack each other for many kinds of reasons, and NTs are also victims (as you mention, for religious persecution, for example). What worked for me was looking inward to focus on myse...

Thanks for this. Yes, this is disturbing when it happens, and somewhat disturbing when it goes away even, because you wonder: what's really changed to make me feel so different? Did I misremember how awful that was? It's just nice to be validated that yes, that experience is real, and yes, it can co...

A postcard that said that I could take all the time and space I needed and that they would be there when I was ready would be helpful. A short message.

Anything expressing love or support in more than a few words would just not get read.

Passing as NT comes with a cost: constant stress about whether you are faking it well enough and eventually losing a sense of who you really are. Undoing all the work I put into my mask has taken years, and I'm only now starting to get a sense of "me." It's a bit like The Little Mermaid: y...
