I am pretty cynical about the new tolerance. It is hard not to be guarded after the intense homophobia that was almost universal when some of us were growing up. I think it’s just become socially unacceptable to be openly homophobic (except on the Christian Right or in black churches). I think under...

"When people congratulate me for being high-functioning I feel like they've slapped me in the face. I know logically that they think that because they don't see the monumental effort I go through everyday to appear normal. Still, it's hurtful and is really annoying. Does anyone else out there e...

One tip is to try to find things that you can enjoy about other people that enable you to ignore the stupidity. However, it is unfortunately true that, if you are highly intelligent, the average person is mind-numbingly stupid and boring. It does not help that most people are intellectually lazy and...

I don't think I can say if it's normal or not normal. but crying a lot can definitely be a sign of depression. If you don't have a psychiatrist or therapist you might want to talk to one about it.

Is there anyone else here at all who has experienced something like this Yes, I can't tell if I'm experiencing the exact same thing you do, but that sounds like my brain. The voice in my head is not exactly "me." And there are a lot of random, meaningless phrases that pop out of nowhere, ...

I think bipolar usually first manifests around puberty but I don't know if that's in the official definition. (It must not be if children can be bipolar, as they say now.) Since you are talking about someone other than yourself being bipolar, that makes it harder. It's possible your daughter had sym...

You said up front that you don't want to talk about therapy or medication but I think you do need to talk to someone. What you have is probably depersonalization/derealization and it sounds fairly extreme. You need to talk to someone to give you perspective, and possibly take medication and see if t...

I think the answer you are pretty much going to get on this board is that life has, objectively, no meaning. That is what I think. However, I find that socializing makes me more energized and less depressed (even though I have no desire to socialize and would just like to stay home by myself all the...

One thing I hear a lot from my gay friends is "I hate gays." It makes no sense. They are gay. I am gay. What exactly are they saying? Gays are b*****s, gays are backstabbers, etc. One friend says he can't go out to dinner if his friends are bringing a "new gay," because he can't ...

Um, no you did NOT screw up! Someone who has schizophrenia (as you imply he does, not bipolar) HAS to take his meds. I would certainly not recommend being in a relationship with someone who had it and was unmedicated. Nothing against schizophrenics, it just is a serious disorder and the disordered t...

Pretty much asexual (no interest in sex). Homoromantic but not very. I think the interest in sex is kind of a prerequisite (to me) to feel romantic.

My aspie-ness overwhelms my gayness. Unless I make a conscious effort in conversation, I slip into a monotone and am too non-expressive for people to ever think I were gay. The stereotype of gayness is pretty much the opposite of a computer nerd with bad social skills.
