Hi Dutchie, your question is so touching. I will tell you what my own mother reassured me when I had the same question (I would say I have BAP): life is a gift. I can tell you also that my daughter has aspergers and depression (maybe I do have it too, she is so like me as a child), but that she woul...

I often get asked if my 9 yo has any friends. For years I've been giving a convoluted, qualified answer of yes. But as I grow to accept my "quirky" kid, it is dawning on me that the answer is really no. Not in the way NT kids have friends. Any other parents feel this way? Feeling |

In reply to the message above about my use of the "r" word, I was not using it as slang for someone with special needs (like my own children), and I certainly didn't mean any offense here, where I come for support. Although I know the term has been politically charged and I did take a risk...

Since my regional question got very little response, thought I'd try a broader question: what are others doing besides homeschooling and public school, are there other options? I have 3 kids, 2 with HFA (7 & 9), and 1 NT (also 7). I don't know if I can keep trying to make a system that doesn't w...

Anyone have opinions/info on schools in Mass for kids with Aspergers? I wonder if some school districts have better public education for mainstreamed kids with very high functioning ASD diagnoses. Especially in the eastern part of the state. Or, if you are in the area and home or private schooling y...

When I first read this I surprised myself by thinking, oh he's so young, wait a year. But I know your frustration. I was told for years before my son's ASD diagnosis that my concerns were unfounded, that he was too young to tell, that he might change. It resulted in a healthy gap between the end of ...

I think this speaks to the whole not-pathologizing-autism movement. I haven't yet read Neurotribes, or Quiet, but just requested them from the library. These books seem like obvious requirements to help me along this journey. I would love to connect with other parents out there traveling this path, ...

I don't blame folks who are in denial. It is an overwhelming endeavor to re-frame your whole life. Everything you learned growing up, everything you thought you knew to be true as an adult, is threatened. I am just beginning to wrap my head around this. What I learned to do (all on my own, and with ...

I love all these replies to my question. Thank you. I wonder if this is one of the stages en route to acceptance of the diagnosis. I'm past denial, and relief, now I'm feeling a bit sad that I unknowingly "gave" this to my kids. My therapist is cautioning me against jumping to the conclusi...

I must admit I didn't read through all the replies, so forgive me if this is repetetive. I too have an oldest diagnosed with high functioning aspergers, and younger (twin) brothers, 2 years apart. Last year when she was seven my sweet daughter began to have tantrums we hadn't seen the likes of in a ...
