Thanks dossa. Not being bound by social norms is another brilliant positive. Being honest about what you think and how you feel, not feeling you have to conform, and being your own person are brilliant (potential) positives to a reduced awareness of other people's thoughts and feelings. In reality, ...

Kiriae - that was a brilliant response. Reduced feelings of embarrassment and social anxiety were a couple that I didn't think of, and your examples of jobs which aspies might be able to do better such as the guy in the information office at the train station demonstrates that sometimes it can be a ...

I'm planning a parent workshop on positive aspects of autism. I want to explore the differences between people with autism and NTs, and examine possible positives in each. The one I'm struggling with is empathy. I'm intending to describe the different types of empathy and how they occur differently ...

I haven't read the whole thread so I don't know if this has already been posted, but I'll post it anyway. This enrages me more than I can express in words: "We're all a bit autistic." No, we're not you buffoon. Being on the autism spectrum creates stresses and daily struggles that a NT can...

But why? If you're not interested in sport, why do you want to have a conversation about it? What you describe sounds so stressful to me that I would rather not have a conversation than have to struggle through one like that. It only seems fair. I like talking about my interests, so it's fair to li...

And to make it worse, if I do finally find someone at a party etc. who really does want to talk at length about politics, science, religion etc., inevitably someone will come up and tell us both to "chill out" because they don't want any "conflicts" to spoil the party. It's call...

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels like this. Are there certain topics of conversation that all newts enjoy talking about? It seems like they all want to talk about work, the weather, 'celebrities', reality TV, cars, their health or their family. Anybody who doesn't want to talk about those sub...

I've been thinking about this some more today and it's making me angry. It's like other people don't value my interests but expect me to value theirs. Why is that?

Hi everyone Sorry I forgot about this thread so didn't check for responses. To answer your questions, Christmas was awful. I was totally overwhelmed by the amount of social expectations and I ended up totally breaking down and having to leave on Boxing Day. It was horrible and it caused a big proble...

When I have to socialise people start off on a conversation about reality TV or sport or something else which I have no interest in, and I am expected to join in with this conversation. If I can't or don't want to, people think I'm being rude or am in a bad mood. But nobody ever starts a conversatio...

Thanks for the replies. It's good to know I'm not the only one who feels like this. I feel very alone now. Although I often like being alone, I don't like feeling alone. I made a list of all my worries last night, and then played some Mario which helped calm me down. It wasn't like that 20 years ago...

Hi everyone. I'm 32 and I have recently been diagnosed with autism. I don't really identify as autistic but more aspie, but that doesn't exist according to the DSM any more. Nonetheless, I consider myself aspie for what it's worth. I thought being diagnosed would make things easier, and at first it ...
