Viking berserkers are now thought to have had a kind of post-traumatic stress syndrome, so yes, it was a difference, and yes, it was definitely adaptive and even celebrated, to some extent, in their society, but it was not a pervasive developmental disorder. Still there is a point: that human divers...

I agree about the idea of autism as part of natural human variation. It's the rest of the world's attitude to people who are different that causes some of the difficulties for hfa. And there are some great books about the idea that the world needs autism because of the distinctive traits. For exampl...

I think the original post was, if not trolling, at the least provocative, negative, and not fully substantiated. And I don't really think the title should be allowed to stand. It's blatantly inaccurate and imprecise. Is it an average, mean, median, etc. What country and region was the sample taken f...

This is really horrible--people working in a professional capacity should not be trying to make those they work with into NTs and should never ever mock and tease. To me this sounds like a kind of picking on difference that sounds like bullying. Someone just gave me a great article on apergers and a...

Hi Foxes, I'm utterly exhausted right now so I just wanted to let you know I'll reply in full either later or tomorrow when I have the energy to look stuff up. But basically: the UK passed an Autism law a few years ago saying there had to be a pathway to screening and diagnosis and that GPS had to r...

Hi Foxes, I couldn't quite tell from your post whether the frustrating exchanges with this mental health person were actually a screening or you were seeing that person for another reason. I am guessing that it wasn't a formal screening from what you write?? ANd if this was just some generic mhp, th...

I agree about the problem with the term disorder.
Actually, I don't even like the word 'condition'--because everyone is in a certain condition, so why should
one be marked. And what if it were discovered that certain non AS traits usually thought of as NT were
also arranged on a spectrum.

ah, I see... I thought I'd posted enough here and there on the board to get to know people a bit. And if I were a researcher (which I'm not) it would be totally unethical and unprofessional to just put out a poll without telling people that it was for research. In fact, I just included the poll beca...

Kraftiekortie, I am sad to hear about the weakness of unions and employee protection in the US.

Is there anything else I can do to encourage more people to join in this thread?

Hi kraftiekortie, thank you for replying :) Being accepted as a sort of court jester sounds like a pretty useful thing, so you don't really have to mask. I'd like that very much. I can see some people who seem eccentric where are work are tolerated but sort of dismissed--as opposed to having their p...

Is there anyone willing to share their experience and advice about workplace disclosure and adjustments? I found some helpful trade union information online--there's a page about the TUC guide, and a link to it here: https://www.tuc.org.uk/equality-issues/disability-issues/tuc-launches-its-first-gui...

Thanks for posting the link to that article--a really timely and positive testimony. (Meanwhile on the main UK radio news we've been hearing the phrase 'person with autism'/ or who 'has autism' for two days in a row. -- The campaign for awareness and acceptance is not reaching as far as it needs to ...

I came to the forum with high hopes for dialogue and understanding. And I posted asking how to get replies, because on the one hand, I knew there would be a lot of people I wanted to communicate with here. And on the other, the sheer din of so many threads seemed like the kind of large busy public s...
