The character, Dr. Simon Reid, on "Criminal Minds" has been depicted well. It was mention somewhere, in an interview with the actor or else on an episode, that Dr. Reid has Asperger's. One of my favorite shows.

I read lots of fiction books. I especially like legal or psychological thrillers. I just discovered an author, Keith Ablow, who is a forensic psychiatrist. So now I'm reading "Compulsion" which is about a murder of a young infant. I love John Grisham, Lisa Scotoline, and others. I also lov...

I was non-verbal until I was 5. I was a classic "Kanner's syndrome" case in that I didn't relate to other children or most other people. I was told later by my mother that I seemed to be floating around in my own world. What I do remember about that period of my life is a LOT of disorganiz...

I've always been limited in food choices. I hate squishy, soft things such as most citrus fruit, tomatoes. Hate cauliflower, cabbages, Brussels sprouts because of the flavor. Same with shrimp, hate the flavor. I don't hardly eat any fruit. When I was young, my mother told me that I'd get scurvy. Wel...

I have a therapist (the one who diagnosed me) who is very good and empathetic of autistic people such as myself. As far as I know, she is NT, but it doesn't matter. However, as far as the NT "experts" who write books and are in academia, many of them haven't a clue about autism. They come ...

I think that you should get a diagnosis from a psychiatrist or psychologist who is experienced in autism issues. I did that; I was diagnosed as on the autism spectrum and it was a great relief to know, though I had suspected it for many years. Check if your insurance will cover it; mine does.

I understand sarcasm and metaphor. I am a writer of fiction and I use metaphors all the time. I not only understand sarcasm, I can give out a sarcastic remark with the best of them. I have empathy and understand how people feel. I was quite good at sports when I was younger.

I was non-verbal until I was around 5. I used to wander around, avoiding other children. I used to keep things in my mouth (my version of stimming). I was and still am very picky about my food. I rarely look people in the eye; if I look someone in the eye, then if they say something, I don't underst...

If you've met an autistic person, then you've met one autistic person. We are all different in many ways.

My therapist, who is the psychiatrist who diagnosed me 3 months ago, isn't trying to make me more neurotypical. She's helping me, as an autistic person, deal with my environment. She led me to a "Meet UP" group of other autistic adults. I've had so much fun meeting and making friends with ...

I don't know what's going on with Autreat. I tried to join the listserv, but never got any response. However, to meet autistic people, my psychiatrist, the one who diagnosed me (and with whom I'm engaging in a course of therapy) suggested the "Meet Up" groups. These groups have "meet-...

There is an old saying about autistic people: when you've met one autistic person, you've met one autistic person. I strongly suspected that I was autistic because when I was quite young, I was non-verbal; I didn't talk until I was 4-5. My mother told me that one of the doctors that she took me to s...

When most "ordinary" NT people think of autism, they think of some pathetic child off in his/her own world, non-verbal, babbling incoherently or else silent, staring out in space, not relating at all to other human beings. I started life out that way, but with some early intervention, I be...

You've only recently been diagnosed, right? So for most of your life, you tried to "pass" ... and now you're exhausted from the effort. We all become less flexible as we age. I heartily resented managers who tried to mold me into whatever they thought they'd like me to be. (And oh, can I ...

I can't be cured of autism any more than I can be cured of having blue eyes. Autism is a part of me, I was born with autism. If somehow someone waved a magic wand and cured me of autism, I wouldn't be me any longer. I don't want to be "cured." I like having intense interests, I like the op...
