^ Thanks for all your advice and comments! Linux Mint is starting to look like a goer. I don't think it's practical for a noob like me to convert my only functioning PC to Linux without a fallback, though. So I'm going to have to suck it up, buy a new Windows 11-capable PC and spend some time workin...

Haven't logged onto Facebook yet this month. While the account I kept is much emptier of engagement bait than the one I got rid of, I've realised I don't actually like using Facebook to talk to people I know from real life. And I never did like it. It always felt really weird and public and uncomfor...

The high street is being hit from both sides. There's online shopping, yes, but there's also the fact that for the past 15 years, central government has forced councils to raise revenue by constantly raising business rates. So, not only are high street shops losing customers to Amazon and Temu, thei...

That's a lie - I don't type, I simply use the unaided power of my mighty brain to beam these words directly into your mind. The rats thing was just a minor annoyance. |

It isn't really a thing we do over here, and I don't know if that's a legal thing or just a cultural thing. Paper rounds yes, lawn mowing no. (I did mow our own lawn as teenager, which was fun until the time I ran over a frog.)

An extract from a Dvorak string quartet which works surprisingly well for harmonica quartet, of all things.

A tiny bit of Mozart for basset horns, a deeper relative of the clarinet that's a bit of a rare instrument nowadays.

This might be a good fit for the In-Depth Adult Life Discussion board, but hardly anyone reads that! I wouldn't have spotted it anywhere else but here. I had a go at an Indian-inspired pot just now. I realised brown rice, red lentils and green lentils all take about 25 minutes to cook, so I combined...

I can't be the only person here looking at the so-called "operating system" Windows 11 and wondering how to get out before I'm trapped in its glitchy, AI-spyware-ridden hellscape. I'm still using Windows 10, but the security updates end next October. Meanwhile, 11 regularly bricks my elder...

Why does this sound so much like the start of a late '90s indie rock song? |

I've just wiped the Facebook account I've been using since early 2020, and gone back to an earlier account I was locked out of for 10 years. I'm mainly keeping it for self-promotion reasons: I'm a musician, and the account can be used to manage an artist page I have. I intend to be EXTREMELY wary ab...

Thanks for this! It seems like a souped-up version of the South Asian staple, kichri. I could really do with cooking more of this type of thing, as it can avoid ingredients that wreck my stomach.

Guns. Full stop. Worst thing we humans EVER invented. I hope the inventor of the first gun is having a fantastic eternity in Hell. Guns also broke the concept of a warrior elite. Surely society was better off when people who could train for physical violence all of the time held most of the power. ...
