Do you have any advice against noisy coworkers? I have tried earplugs, headphones and a quiet room, but they keep talking LOUD. Should I ask them to keep quiet? They seem to hate me, whenever I hush them.

I work with archives, libraries and administration. It is usually office jobs that require academic skills and an eye for detail. Asking for salary is not easy with friends or family. But, that dog watching job really sounds like a job. I think you should ask for salary or a discount on the rent. You are not just doing favors here, you are actually working with the dog. A job is a job.
