Anyone have advice for avoiding inlaws? We just built a house next door to my wife's parent's beach house. The ocean is great, but her three grown sons and her parents and half thier family live there. I don't like any of them and their phony religiosity is cloying. I'm also much more intelligent ( ... |

I don't buy expensive meats---I eat vegan and do fine with B-12 supplements and a good diet with few processed foods. Better for me and cheaper too. But what I'm worried about is will I have to give up things I don't want to give up----a car, internet. What kind of healthcare will I get? It's going ... |

Thanks for the advice. Due to my circumstances and our state, alimony is very unlikely, which is fine with me, since I want a clean break anyway without fighting for support (I probably would not win due to new legislation and my personal circumstances). Also, the stress of an acrimonious divorce is... |

I'm considering divorcing, but if I do, I will have nothing but a small income from disability---for many reasons. I'll be able to take nothing with me, maybe a very small, pretty much insignificant amount. He earns all the money (a lot--more than 200k a year)--and he owns all the property and owned... |

yikes, I can only imagine how out of place you feel not even as an athiest as I myself am christian but just as a NYer alone ... The south is weird like that, nuff said. Many of them are very butthurt. All I can say is try not to provoke the butthurted and do not engage with intellectually inferior... |

A nice thing you'll find out over time is that even in your small town you will meet artists, atheists, progressives, and gay people. And you will really, really appreciate them! In my experience, talking about food, crafts, travel, home repairs, and/or sports provides enough common ground to get b... |

Thanks for the advice about avoiding the religious---I do that already but there are more religious people here. I've made a few friendly acquaintances at our new veterinarian's office and also at the dog groomer---I really got along with our dog groomer. LGBT support is a great idea. I'm in an area... |

Help! Southerners born and bred, and Yankees who have moved to the South?? I'm moving from NYC, where I'm from, to a small town in the bible belt in the South. My goal is to keep from making enemies for now (I've made a few here already, lols) and maybe eventually to make real friends here (which se... |

Thanks everyone, I appreciate it. I have decided already to have lots of "other things" legitimately to do because social interactions always are hard for me even with people I understand and who I like...so saying "I can't " is nothing new to me, I'll be ok. My version of things... |

Thanks for the encouragement and the insight. I think of myself as a social failure not in general, but yes, in this particular instance, since I failed to not offend these easily offended people.... Maybe I am being a bit hard on myself. Any advice on how to avoid social occasions? These peo... |

They aren't very liked by other people either, true. But I see it as a failure on my part to have not gotten along with them.Somehow I serioulsy offended them and I have no idea how, and this worries me. I'm wondering if that level of social skill (to get along with crappy people) is just beyond me?... |

Anyone have advice for dealing with extended family? I've been "frozen out" again after being polite and have no idea what I did. I don't like the people doing the "freezing" but this is the second time this has happened to me recently (my son in law's family also, "froze&qu... |
