It's one of the things I've always wondered. I was diagnosed at 32. Would life had been any easier had I been diagnosed earlier? What if I'd been diagnosed at, say, 7 and given appropriate assistance? Sadly, knowing humanity for what it is, instead of (as it was) being bullied as a "weirdo"...

In my opinion, no person is so good that they can say that and be forgiven. Plenty of other people in the world to talk to.

I managed to avoid this event. It took a whole week of saying "no" and refusing to discuss it any further. They were still trying to change my mind as late as this afternoon, but I put on the "hardest" face I could manage and said I wasn't going. Now that's over, the fun will com...

They're still at it today. They've now resorted to the typical NT persuasion tactic - the guilt trip. "We'd like you to go. Everybody would be disappointed if you didn't."
Twenty years ago, that might have worked on me. But I've learned a lot since then. |

People in general like a constant drip-feed of inconsequential social activity. For many, it's one of the few reminders that they're still alive. While we may mock the lack of content behind it, remember that mashed potato is more easily digested than steak tartare. I often think that the only reaso...

In the old days of the Internet (by which I mean 1997, when I first got online), you were advised to lurk as much as possible. Best to get the feel of a place before putting your foot in it, as it were. social networking web 2.0 really killed the internet bringing in all the normies We were always ...

I understand what you mean by all of this. I have a similar work environment, where my bosses know I am autistic but none of my coworkers do (actually, one does. I don't know who she may have told). My autism does not interfere with my work at all, but it does cause similar social problems like you...

Next week, where I work is holding a "staff party". There will be noise and lots of people. I'm sure you know where this is going. Well, I certainly won't be. And I'm going to have to justify this to people for the rest of this week. Apparently it's not enough to say you're not going becau...

I presume I'm high-functioning. I was diagnosed at 32 after a lifetime of bewilderment, so in the years between childhood and then I learned enough coping strategies to get by. I've held down a full time job for 19 of the 21 years since 1996, so I mostly function in society, though as time goes on I...

It's pretty simple. If you spend your entire life listening to people tell you how weird, defective, non-compliant and inappropriate you are, then of course you're unlikely to like yourself very much.
If you're told something often enough, you tend to believe it. |
