Wannabe-authoritarians can always be found - the question is how much power they can gain until some safeguard system reacts. That's why I believe systematical distribution of power (e.g. tripartition) is crucial to maintain such safeguard systems. It does not ensure perfection but it prevents worst...

There's a spectrum between the two - a powerful tool of authoritarian propaganda is to keep people confused, like nothing ever could be really true.

Then, most of the people everywhere want primarily to survive. That means you spend most of your time and focus on your and your family's basic needs.

"Countries" don't want things.
Various people want various things... and, as "communist" countries were all authoritarian, what people inhabiting them wanted didn't count.

Other than being to the right of center, what was wrong with Merkel? Nearly all her politics about Russia and her inability to admit she had been wrong after it all blew up. Also, weird energetics policies that neither assured energetic independence nor seriously adressed the CO2 problem but contai...

1990s here were not exactly what they were in the West - it was a time of rapid transformation, poverty, crime, fear and hope for the future. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0vXhwYDfOA And bazaars, just like the one above. Most of them don't exist anymore. It was fun to be a kid back then but when ...

One-party systems are unstable unless all opposition is being actively supressed. Someone will show up to capitalize on still serious political power of Republicans. Or Democrats will split. Or some third party would raise (least probable, imo). You have a system that promotes two parties and it wil...

Yeah, Belarus wasn't a good place to live in middle 20th century. If your ancestors were Jewish, they'd probably find Soviets a lesser evil - otherwise, they'd likely find the nazis the lesser evil.
The truth was, both were hellishly evil and lucky who was away from them at that times.

I don't think we can entirely give up market economy. Subsistence economy does not work with advanced technologies, gift/potluck economies become too complex to handle in large societes. Market economy simplifies the rules of exchange of goods, so it can go in large quantities. A problem of scale ag...

Are you surprised? These guys are fighting for survival, they're scared.

Letting in international investigators is the most they can do - and they do it.

Yes, both these incidents (along with the more recent one in Moldova) seem to be genuine colateral damage.
What's your point?

I don't dispute there is widespread support from the Russian population for Putin. But their is widespread propaganda about Ukraine being taken over by Nazis. I think (rightly or wrongly) a lot of Russians have bought into this propaganda. Just like the historical nazis bought into propaganda that ...

^ Signed up nazis ended up primarily in the SS, as opposed to Wehrmacht. But Germans of that time had a culture of authority and discipline, so if their orders were attrocitous... I'm not sure about how active Wehrmacht was in e.g. this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wola_massacre The order came fro...

I’m all for Russia being held accountable for any war crimes in WW2 and now but my point is why just Russia? I understand a million Armenians died at the hands of Turkey in a type of holocaust in the 20th century but no one seems bothered about that. Actually, the very OP, in the very this thread.....

Everyone should be held accountable proportionally to their sins.
And in every case, a question is to be asked: have they learned from their past to not repeat it?
