I'm overly emotional too, to the point that my emotions are so intense sometimes they almost physically hurt. And I cry when watching most movies :oops:

I'd say so. I was so intense as a kid or teenager.
Does anyone else get the impression they're sort of growing out of their autism because of the diminished intensity of special interests and doing better socially as you get older?

Definitely. I attribute a lot of the bullying I had at school to me talking endlessly about stuff I liked, so I got the message that looking obsessed about something won't make you exactly popular. I still get obsessed about stuff though

Yes when I was getting diagnosed I was feeling very self conscious, but that's normal autistic behaviour I'm guessing - feeling all the time like you have to control your behaviour and how you come across cause it doesn't naturally explain itself? During my assessment I wasn't acting autistic at all...

but in terms of borrowing money to get a diagnosis. there is something wrong with everything you do. you might borrow the money, get tested, and not get a diagnosis. but maybe you still have Asperger's, but the professional failed to identify it. then you owe the money you borrowed, you have no job...

Aside from social ineptitude, what other symptoms are you aware of? Knowing whether you are NT or on the spectrum will help guide you in the right direction. Sometimes just understanding yourself can open the gateway to many new possibilities, and being confused about who you are can hold you back....
