I've been trying to get a diagnosis since before December 2017. My GP had to refer me to the local mental health services first before I can be passed on to the adult diagnosis services. I chased it with the GP a few weeks ago. The current estimated waiting time for the first referral is 6 months to...

Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: Have you been accused of lying because of your autism?

I will frequently say the wrong thing unintentionally, then get accused of lying. I try to keep control over it by giving myself extra time before I answer anything to process what was said, but it's like there is some sort of disconnect between what I want to say and what actually comes out. Then o...

The appointment today was interesting. The GP listened to why I thought I am autistic and looked at the evidence I presented her with. She's made a referral to the mental health team for an initial chat and they may be able to refer on from there depending on what they find. At the very least they m...

Medieval History - particularly siege warfare. I got to build a siege weapon for one of my classes to look at the engineering behind some of the siege engines. Warfare tactics and the culture of war was also very interesting.

I have to do frequent travel alone for work. I do a lot of research before I go anywhere so I know exactly where my hotel and the office is located, including using Google Street View to look at the area and do a virtual drive from the hotel to the office so I know what to look for. A GPS is essenti...

Depression is a difficult thing to overcome. My husband tries to push me away when he's depressed as well. The best thing is to give him time and keep being there for him.

I don't like the taste. Also most alcoholic drinks contain some sort of carbonation which I cannot stand. A white wine or a rose wine are the only two things I can tolerate. Given the choice, I would rather drink something else like juice.

I was pretty much raised by my cat Buffy. Now I have two cats, Max and Minnie who are essentially my children. I can't imagine life without them.

I meow and howl on the subways. I do something similar. I sometimes give a high pitched cat yowl when I'm acutely stressed or startled. I will also meow and "talk cat" to people sometimes - although I try and minimise it as much as possible in public. My husband jokes that I was raised by...

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I will look into Rozerem/Ramelteon as well. I definitely need something at this point.

Alita - That's a good idea. I know I'm Vitamin D deficient anyway as I don't spend a lot of time outside. I'll see if I can find a UV lamp to help as well.

I found setting a timer helpful. I would set the timer for 5 minutes, or whatever I felt I could reasonably get away with, and then for the time set, relentlessly focus on the task. I'd remind myself if I got distracted that it was only 5 minutes and I can concentrate for that long. When the timer w...

I flap a bit, usually when I'm really stressed, but I try to only let go when I'm alone. I'll try and retreat to a private place and let loose. Most recently, I was really nervous about a job interview I was going to, so spent the minute riding in the elevator up to the interview alone rocking and f...

Yes, frequently. I had a lot of frustration and anger as I was growing up as I wasn't always able to express myself fast enough, or sometimes at all, or explain why I didn't like something (usually a sensory issue). Prolonged exposure would inevitably cause a meltdowns. I would retreat to my room to...

I get to spend Christmas with my parents, my husband, and his parents. This will not be pleasant. I will be expected to entertain them and participate in the conversations. Then, at some unspecified point in the day, I will be handed a phone and expected to talk to everyone in my extended family for...

As far as non medication strategies go I don't really have any to help you with your sleeplessness but I've been using Mirtazapine also known as Remeron and it's worked like a charm for the past 11 years for me. Precisely why I keep using it because it's so completely effective that helping me to s...

I would say if it's something you are interested in doing, then it might be worth having conversation with someone from the nursing department at the universities you were thinking of applying to. I know quite a few parents who are nurses, so it can be done. Something else to consider: Sometimes, re...
