Hi Su, My first response to being diagnosed was one of sadness. I'd felt special (quirky, funny etc) all my life and now here there was this label telling me that it wasn't me, I wasn't special, I just had something that other special people had. That sadness lasted for a while ... a long while actu...

Good article.... and I think you're right. No matter how much we diss "rain man", there's no denying that it brought autism to mainstream fictional media. Since then, there's been a plethora of shows which use characters on the spectrum as central or background characters. Often I think th...

I guess the main thing about it being 10 years old is that my 4 year old is now 14. He talks a lot more now. Interestingly not as full-on non-stop chatty as my Asperger's son but certainly enough to get by. I used to think that once the speech delay disappeared, they basically get their diagnosis &q...

Hi SanjayK, (apologies if this sounds a little direct)... I completely understand your position. I was like that as a kid myself and my two boys on the spectrum, now aged 16 and 13 have similar issues, though not nearly as bad as those you describe. First of all, while I personally love computers an...

It's quite common for people to have both Bi-polar and Aspergers.

I'm pretty sure that the diagnostic criteria specifically rules out the co-existence of schizophrenia and Asperger's syndrome. However I have met some individuals who I'm certain have both, so I think the criteria is wrong.

Hi, I'm a Sydney-sider. I've been to Perth a few times but I don't live there. Life is ok. My problems this year certainly aren't Asperger's related. Most of the time life is good enough. Australia has good support and understanding of Asperger's syndrome. The people down here are reasonably toleran...

Doctor Who Then the obvious BTTF, Terminator, Butterfly Effect, Heroes, Bill and Ted, Planet of the Apes etc.... I thought I might try to put some things in that haven't been said - they're not necessarily my favourites but are good anyway; The Jacket (2005) Twelve Monkeys (1995) - and The Pier (La...

Hi Kellie, While the behaviours your describe aren't uncommon in children with Asperger's syndrome, it doesn't necessarily follow that they are "caused by" Asperger's syndrome. There's no easy way for anyone to explain what is really going on - except perhaps your son, with a little insight. That sa...

As far as I know, there's no disability allowance specifically for Asperger's Syndrome in Australia.

The key to getting a job is to follow one's special interest.

What does he do in his spare time?

Courtnado, stop blaming yourself. We all have to navigate tricky situations in our marriage and it's usually the adults who have to find a way to appease the children. Your husband is the adult here. Not the (then) eight year old daughter. It's clear that your husband has a lot of sensory issues and...

Note: Meltdowns and Temper tantrums are NOT the same thing. A temper tantrum usually results from someone attempting to use force/violence get something. For example, a child will chuck a tantrum until they are given a sweet. Some adults have tantrums too. The key with a tantrum being that the pers...

People with Aspergers syndrome aren't naturally any more violent than neurotypical "normal" people however there is one condition, called a meltdown which can cause serious problems if it isn't under control. Note: Meltdowns and Temper tantrums are NOT the same thing. A temper tantrum usually result...

There's no pleasing everybody. I like aspie because to me it's the shortest and least offensive? of the words. Perhaps you're prefer the correct terms; Person with Autism / Autistic Person (because there's no Aspergers in the DSM V). Even so, I try to use various words in blog posts so as to not alw...

His racism seems to be the "normal" racist believes of the beginning of the XXth century (judging the past through the morality of another time is stupid) mixed with aspi-ish obsessions. True, but finding out things about people that you don't like can really put you off them. For example; H. G. We...

BTW, I know it's early days yet, as I'm only about halfway through the classic series, but I want an opinion. Originally, I meant this review blog as a review of the classic series only, but does anyone want me to go onto the new series as well? Yes.... I didn't think that there would really be an ...

The Brain of Morbius is actually quite a clever story but it's a pity that it was limited by the resources of its day. The alien spaceship graveyard at the beginning would have been so much more creepy if done with better effects (though the mutant in this scene looks better than it did in the lackl...
