Anyone who reads it, please note they at one point quote me as saying something, when I was actually telling them the story of what D.J. Savarese once told an interviewer. That's the "treated with respect" part. I was clear that it was D.J.'s words when I was talking to them, but their tape recorde...

I wouldn't be surprised if parents of ASD kids (who are frequently on the spectrum themselves) get accused of Munchhausen's by proxy more often than non ASD parents. I have never been accused of it, but I spent a couple of years being afraid of it because one of the traits/signs/symptoms of Munchhau...

What do you see are the positive attributes of autism? I think most of the ones I would give have been listed. I'm not sure if anyone said... a tendency to see all people as equals. Egalitarianism. Aspies might think they are from another planet, but they would not be so likely to say, "Take me to ...

... Many of the people on Autism Speaks have LFA kids and can't see why anyone would want to be the way they are. My impression is that most of the parents on AS board have PDD,nos kinds of kids and some have Asperger's. There are definitely parents on that board (sock puppet types) who lie about h...

anbuend said One, autism isn't a sliding scale. It's a many-dimensional thing. I'm happy to agree with that, I usually say that but for the purposes of discussion/understanding I simplified it. Regardless of how it's actually arrived at there's a point at which the affected person cannot function s...

PEKIN, Ill. (AP) — A woman accused of killing her autistic daughter testified Friday that she attempted to suffocate the 3-year-old with a pillow three days before she succeeded with a plastic garbage bag. Karen McCarron said she couldn't go through with it using the pillow. When prosecutor Kevin J...

Lies, damn lies and 'counterknowledge' By Damian Thompson [page 2] ...The dividing line between fiction and non-fiction is becoming increasingly hard to draw. These days, public opinion is so malleable that a product does not even have to pretend to be fact in order to affect perceptions of truth: ...

Okay... so the first post is irrational, but accusing someone of being part of Eli Lilly just because they disagree with you isn't!? And, for that matter, anyone "really" dealing with autism would agree with you? That's even more unlikely than the original post. CONSTANT pro-vaccine! all that is on...

You can search the web for scientific evidence of the risks. I won't bother searching again for it and posting because I doubt it will convince you. As to the contaminants: quantitative evidence? - the drug companies certainly aren't going to test for it As to the Amish: non-anecdotal evidence? - m...

My ASD kid has nystagmus. But it's only noticeable when s/he looks up, down, left or right as far as possible. Eye doctors test for it by having people look to the right, left, etc without moving their heads. In my kid's case it's probably caused by Arnold-Chiari syndrome (a not too uncommon brain m...

I think my dad was about 37ish when I was born, my mom was about 36. My ex was 24 when our ASD kid was born, and 26 when the NT kid was born. But there's another set of data that points to the grandmothers of boys on the spectrum, that is their being older when they give birth to daughters who then ...

I think of AS as a different type of personality caused by genetics. I think AS was underdiagnosed previously and the rate has remained about the same throughout history. I would like to ask those of you who saw the documentary tonight on PBS, at what functioning level the subject was. He seemed medium-functioning to me. He wasn't able to live by himself. autism_diva, I feel bad for the girl and I'm sorry it happened. I just don't think it was anti-vaccine thinking that caused her to do what she did. I think she was mentally unstable and would have done it anyway. I think she felt hopeless that she couldn't be cured. If she bought into the genetic t...
