This sounds so much like what we dealt with last year when my autistic granddaughter was in the special ed room in the morning and then in kindergarten in the afternoon. The staff was convinced that her meltdowns and bathroom accidents were deliberate temper tantrums and not the result of too much s...

We certainly weren't sure my granddaughter was ready to attend pre-kindergarten last year, but we thought it would be helpful in seeing what areas she needed more help in. That was before she was actually diagnosed with autism. About halfway through the school year the pre-K teacher asked us if we w...

I've read that in something like 5% of these kids changing their diets makes a huge improvement. I'd say it's also possible that for another small percentage of these kids changing or eliminating the vaccines could make a huge improvement as well. These are things that need more research and testing...

Have you read anything about S.A.D. - Seasonal Affective Disorder? It's generally worse in the winter.

I think Nan nailed it when she said your little guy is more like a three year old than a five year old. Unfortunately for us, we didn't get a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum until my granddaughter started Kindergarten at the age of 6. If we had known, maybe we would have waited a year to start her in s...

I love that you did all that. Would you please come to our school and talk to my oldest granddaughter's class that way? We have long suspected she has ADHD, and the more I learn about Autism I wonder if she actually has that (high functioning). I don't know how well I would do in speaking to the tea...

I had no idea the IEP should not be filled out before the meeting, so the parents can add their own input, good to know as we're having our second IEP meeting later this month. And good idea to take a few days before signing the IEP, maybe have a chance to talk to the therapist, or to remember somet...

That seems like a good idea, writing out a list of possibly troublesome behaviors and what you have found works to help sort them out. What we are finding is that there seems to be a world of difference in how our little one deals with things at our house, at her daddy's house on the weekend, and at...

Nah, we don't really care about the potty issues, except it is a hassle to have to go to school and clean her up when she's pooped in her pants. We just don't want anyone to make her feel bad about herself because she isn't potty trained - and that's what the substitute teacher was doing to her. :ev...

Can't help with the issue of boy's underwear, but want to let you know I share his frustration. I can't wear nylon undies or lace bras. I was so thrilled when I discovered LovePats underpants but then they stopping importing them - occasionally I can snag a couple of pair through ebay but the shippi...

We've already done some research about her wetting and soiling herself - and tried eliminating gluten (no result) and then fruit (some result). But she doesn't have encopresis - she has had less than a dozen solid stools altogether in her whole 6 years, never any constipation. The two signs that I w...

Is it possible at all that Nove is having accidents, because she is scared. Scared of what ever it is they want her to do. I know when I'm nervous my stomach is in knots and I have to go more often. Something you said about the teacher saying that she is manipulative ie; it happens when she is aske...

The only reason I wanted E there is because she is entering middle school in the fall. Near the end, she kept mouthing to me "when are we going home" LOL She was bored - and probably didn't understand half of it. She was able to hear it from the teachers - what accommodations are and will be in pla...

Sounds like good advice. How does one go about finding an advocate? I found mine through a user group of the Autism Society of America (my local chapter). It was kind of bizarre to see how different the meetings were with the advocate present. I wished I had one from the beginning and maybe my son'...

*relieved sigh* My daughter was got a phone call from Mrs. Miller, the resource room teacher (who is home on maternity leave), and it seems she was saying that although the sub teacher is a good teacher, she really doesn't have any experience working with the "special kids", and is very narrow mind...

I say this all the time about IEP meetings. It's so much better to take a child advocate with you. The whole tone of the meeting changes when the school people have to deal with a 3rd party professional. Also, take a digital recorder to IEP meetings. You are allowed to do that as long as you tell t...
