Oliver Sacks wrote a book about how humans experience music. He says that some people have "amusia," meaning that their brains can't appreciate music. To them, "a symphony sounds like the clattering of pots and pans." Even for those whose dislike of music is not as extreme, I think there are people ...

For me, it feels like I have the intellect of an educated adult but the emotional maturity of a 12 year old. (That is how I have explained it to people.) Everything affects me like a ton of bricks dumped on my head. This explanation doesn't include a lot of the details, like sensory issues, etc, but...

It takes a lot of trial and error to find the right medication. I think it's important to be aware of the possible side effects so you can recognize them right away. As a general rule, I have found that if I feel different in some way that is not positive, the first thing to suspect is the drug. SSR...

"Correcting distorted thinking" is the entire focus of CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), which is the most common type of therapy out there. Your therapist assumes that your distorted thinking is your reason for being in therapy. If you don't believe that you have distorted thinking, then you need...

I think it's an interesting point. For myself, I always have been very bad at imagining my future. It's not here, not now, so it doesn't exist yet, and if I try to look toward it, all I can see is a vague fog. I have been incapable of making decisions that would influence or determine my future, and...

needles hurt like hell. somebody needs to invent a replacement for such. somebody needs to invent a way to turn pain off like a light switch, or at least to turn the pain knob from "11" down to 2 or so. There are drugs, like Vicodin, which are fairly effective. There's also Emla cream which can be ...

I find that cities are more anonymous. People are less likely to notice or care if they see someone whose behavior they might consider unusual. I like being able to walk around the city and have no one pay any attention to me.

pain hurts :( it is a miserable affair, and it is best to have nothing whatsoever to do with it. Yes, completely agree. It's very odd... like stuff coming from the skin is irrelevant, but stuff coming from the internal organs is processed as overly significant. I'll just put it down to my weird sen...

I've only been to one GRASP meetup and it was about a year ago, but I'm on the email list for my area and there are often planned get togethers at museums and bars that people seem to enjoy a lot. I haven't been to any of them because I don't feel like I am autistic enough, so I don't think I would ...

I used to be very defiant and was outraged at injustice and people throwing their authority around, and I would often call them on it. But over the years I have learned to be much more diplomatic. I try to think of other people's feelings, especially security guards' -- they are often the lowest per...

I don't know what state you live in. Here in NYC you are eligible for Family Health Plus, which is medicaid for people who have a slightly higher income, if you make less than $900 a month and don't have more than $11,000 in the bank. There are also free health clinics here in the city. They are usu...
