Used to watch TV a lot, find it quite uninteresting these days. Prefer documentaries anyway, but the best ones these days are on the radio (or podcasts). I often think a TV doumentary these days is a 10 minute radio talk padded out with irrelevant pictures to make it last an hour (the main honourabl...

Often - usually to myself.

I assume that most people will "rehearse" saying the things that are important to them to say, in case they get an audience sometime. But since I do it silently, I guess others do too, so I might be mistaken.

Hello; I have been trying (with mixed success) to describe to friends why I am finding some routine tasks so difficult. The best description I can give them so far is like this:- - imagine a 3 lane motorway, where there are roadworks. Because of the work, 2 lanes are closed. All the traffic has to g...

I learnt to swim (not very elegantly), though I don't recall actually doing any for several years. But it's important to learn - an absolutely essential survival skill. You don't need to be any sort of athlete - just able to move around in water at a walking pace (or at least be able to keep your he...

These are sensible questions, and I suspect the only good answers are to be found in research that is still to be done. You are quite right that learning and "hard-wiring" are not necessarily mutually exclusive. As far as I know, research shows that infants only a few days old are usually interested...

I find a lot of the routine stuff (housework especially) difficult to organise. I sketch diagrams (like the Buzan mid maps) constantly, and I'm easily lost / distracted without them. But I score high in IQ tests (used to, anyway). The big question is, are there any techniques that we can try that mi...

Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: noise canceling headphones???

Hi; I think we should distinguish between different sorts of headphones:- - there are the "active" noise cancelling phones that make a sound that is out of phase to the noise coming in. These can work very well with low pitched sounds (like aircraft engine noise). For technical reasons, they are not...

What, compared to all those internet forums where all the posts are terribly sane and un-nutterly? Don't think I've seen many of those.

It's funny how much dream content is violent, even when your life isn't particularly so. There are many people who keep online dream journals; you'll see a lot of vague, non-logical stuff, but you'll also see violence quite often. I've heard a theory that these violent dreams are your mind preparin...
The first two are my favourite ever books. I didn't like Titus Alone much. Gormenghast is an amazing place.
Same here - I didn't finish Titus Alone, though I'll give it another go. I'm not sure whether it's the lack of the something like Gormenghast environment that it lacks, or simp...

Hi folks; very many thanks for the replies; gives me much to think about. Donkey - yes, 'fraid that's consistent with my impression. I hope the NHS can be helpful to you and your son. Rusty - good point about the DVLA, I didn't know this. KOR- thanks, I'll study the NAS material (quite a lot there)....

It certainly is not a waste of time, but I fear it may take up a lot of your time. 2 blogs that I look at quite often http://scienceblogs.com/aetiology/ http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/ These get loads of nasty comments from the "anecdotes = evidence" crowd. Maybe worth a look at the silly respons...

Yes, you have a perfect right to feel angry, though of course showing it is not always "politic". I'm not sure if these people are work colleagues (or worse, "superiors") - if so, this sort of behaviour shows a lack of training, at the very least. As far as you can, treat it as a symptom of their pr...

and has anyone read the Helliconia trilogy by Brian Aldiss?

My main eye contact issue is that I find it very hard to really listen to someone if I'm looking at them. Subjectively, it's like the sight of the person's face interferes with the images I'm seeing from what they say. It probably is not coincidence that I like radio, but rarely watch TV. (There's a...
